What should this place look like? The first thing to consider is the geographical environment of the museum. The houses in Songzhuang are typical farmyards in the north. They are surrounded by large red brick walls. All the rooms are open to the courtyard with windows, lighting, ventilation and privacy. From the outside, every courtyard is a box surrounded by a large red wall without windows, without excessive sense of design. We learn from this residential form: the main exhibition and academic space of the art museum is enclosed by red brick walls into a series of square boxes of different sizes, lighting through the inner courtyard or the top.
