Background conditions for establishment
As the landmark building of Songzhuang Art Park, the establishment of Songzhuang Art Museum is closely related to the gradual formation of Songzhuang artist community.
Songzhuang artist community began to form in 1994. Critics Li Xianting, Fang Lijun and other artists took the lead in renting houses and buying houses. After that, artists village of Yuanmingyuan was the main member of the collective migration, forming a large-scale and constantly improving and expanding free artist community. There are 47 villages in Songzhuang Town, of which 12 are inhabited by artists, and the number of artists in the whole town has reached several thousand.
With the gradual formation of Songzhuang Artist Village, in order to expand the influence of the artist village, and to build a platform for artists in the artist village to communicate with the outside world, the Songzhuang Art Museum, funded by Xiaobao village committee, was officially opened to the public on October 6, 2006 with the suggestion of critic Li Xianting and the support of Songzhuang town government.
location
Songzhuang Art Museum is a non-profit cultural and art institution which is planned and constructed according to the modern multi-function goal and serves for the development and service of Chinese contemporary art. It is also a platform for international exchange of contemporary art.
Because Songzhuang Art Museum is funded by Xiaobao village committee, it is the first art museum with the lowest administrative level in China. Compared with the existing domestic art museums serving contemporary art, the political and commercial background of Songzhuang Art Museum is relatively weak. In order to provide a relatively pure space for the development of contemporary art, Mr. Li Xianting, the director of the museum, emphasizes that academic standards should be put first for all the exhibitions in the museum, that is, Songzhuang Art Museum is an art museum that emphasizes academic environment. The museum itself is a non-profit organization.
Function and significance
Clear the boundaries of contemporary art. Nowadays, many domestic artists are not very clear about the concept and connotation of contemporary art, and all kinds of art forms are included in the scope of contemporary art. In order to re regulate and clarify the boundaries of contemporary art, Songzhuang Art Museum expresses its views and attitudes to the outside world through a series of activities such as exhibitions, forums and lectures.
Become a platform for Chinese and even international artists to exchange. There are thousands of artists living in Songzhuang. Only by bringing more information from the outside world into this area, continuously injecting vitality and vitality, and making more information exchange between this area and the outside world, can it be more conducive to the development of local artists and better promote excellent artists to the outside world. Songzhuang Art Museum provides a good platform for the exchange of artists from all over the world.
Songzhuang will form a vitality of the art ecological chain. Thousands of artists of different levels and levels gathered in this area. When some of the original artists left this area, a large number of new generation artists came here. The continuous flow of personnel in this area has injected a lot of fresh blood into this area, and promoted local artists, which will help Chinese artists grow and develop better. But the artists themselves exist as loose individuals in this area. How to organically combine the groups of artists to form a truly mobile art ecological chain will be the responsibility of Songzhuang Art Museum in the coming days.
On the architecture of Art Museum
Songzhuang artist village is located in the north of Tongzhou new town, Beijing. In 1994, critics Li Xianting and Fang Lijun of Yuanmingyuan Art Village settled here, which promoted the collective migration of Yuanmingyuan artists as the main members. Up to now, a large-scale and constantly improving and expanding community of free artists has formed, gathering thousands of free professional artists and related artists from all over the country Industry personage. Songzhuang Art Museum is located in Xiaobao village, Songzhuang Town, which provides a platform for exhibition and exchange for this special community. The site is located in the northwest corner of Xiaobao village, Songzhuang, near an idle industrial land of the Sixth Ring Road, surrounded by scattered factories and warehouses. In the distance is the base of North China power network, high-voltage lines dense, endless. The houses nearby are typical farmyards in the north. Because Songzhuang Art Museum is located in a special geographical location, compared with most of the public art museums we are familiar with in the prosperous city (such as Guggenheim Art Museum in New York, Pompidou Art Center in Paris, China Art Museum in Beijing, etc.), it is necessary to build a contemporary art museum in the traditional northern countryside and a village level beauty Museum invested by Xiaobao village Art Museum, more attractive and challenging. So what kind of design can not only respect Songzhuang's geographical and cultural background in image, but also contain unpredictable future art in space? At the beginning of 2005, nearly 1000 artists have gathered and lived in Songzhuang, and this number is still expanding. Artists have become an important part of the population structure of the village. An art museum built in such an artist intensive work and living area will be a temple or church in this future art community, and a place for artists to worship and meet regularly. What should this place look like? The first thing to consider is the geographical environment of the museum. The houses in Songzhuang are typical farmyards in the north. They are surrounded by large red brick walls. All the rooms are open to the courtyard with windows, lighting, ventilation and privacy. From the outside, every courtyard is a box surrounded by a large red wall without windows, without excessive sense of design. We learn from this residential form: the main exhibition and academic space of the art museum is enclosed by red brick walls into a series of square boxes of different sizes, lighting through the inner courtyard or the top. The size of the specific space, the size of the wall is set according to the requirements of the function. These square boxes leave the ground and float in the air, forming a horizontal and transparent place with the ground to accommodate the functions of various service facilities of the art museum, such as office, storage, toilet, power distribution, etc., which can not only do small-scale exhibitions, but also be a relaxed place for communication. Thus, the shape of the building presents a sharp contrast: the first floor space has windows but no walls, and the second floor space has walls but no windows. A 3-meter-high transparent glass curtain surrounds the building, connecting the indoor and outdoor views. The gray brick on the ground extends from the square through the double glass to the interior, and the exhibition content can also be extended from the interior of the building to the outdoor sculpture square, emphasizing the invitationality and openness of the space, so that you can see the landscape around the art museum. All kinds of service facilities, combined with rest benches, are weakened into square boxes of furniture scale, with industrial traces of European pine board walls and dark gray rough floor tiles, showing a clear sense of material in the first floor space. The second floor space uses white to weaken the material sense of the space, and the light is only the basic element of the functional requirements. The art here is the purest landscape. The art museum is invested by the village committee of Xiaobao village, with a construction area of about 5000 square meters and a total cost of about 3000 yuan / square meter. The construction and indoor construction are completed by the village construction team, and the construction materials are mainly produced by the village manufacturers. The design started in the spring of 2005, started in the summer, and completed in the summer of 2006. On October 6, 2006, the opening exhibition of Songzhuang Art Museum was held on the opening day of the second Songzhuang Cultural Festival.
