Construction history

In October 1860, the Paris discount bank set up an agency in Shanghai to act as an agent for bills of exchange and cash of Sino French trade. At the same time, it was entrusted by the Council of the French concession to issue municipal construction bonds of the French concession. After 1875, the French government established the Oriental Bank of Indochina to expand and strengthen its control over trade and economy of French Paris. The bank was jointly established by the French social industrial bank, Paris commercial bank, Holland Holland bank and Paris discount bank. Headquartered in Paris, there are branches or agencies in major cities in the French city of Indochina. In 1899, the bank opened its branch in Shanghai and began its business history of more than 50 years in Shanghai. Before the bank entered Shanghai, French discount bank, one of its major shareholders, had bought the real estate on the 29th Bund from the British rules church. French discount bank is also one of the major shareholders of China Russia Dao Sheng Bank, so China Russia Dao Sheng Bank set up its business here at the beginning of its establishment. In 1907, after the Chinese Russian Dao Sheng bank bought the property of the former British land bank on the 15th Bund, it left here and became the address of the Shanghai Branch of the French Oriental Bank. (15 Bund - Sino Russian Dao Sheng Bank building). Its main business in Shanghai is to issue bank notes, deposit money, discount, exchange, buy and sell securities, and act as an agent for bond issuance. With the development of business, the original building is not enough. In 1911, the bank demolished the old house and rebuilt the new building, which was completed and put into use in 1914. The new building is designed by Tonghe foreign company, constructed by Huashang Huaisheng construction plant, with reinforced concrete frame structure. The building has French Baroque architectural style. The outer wall of the building is stacked with rectangular stones to draw a smooth line, which is symmetrical and thick. In the middle of the first floor is a large arch, and the lintel is decorated with a swirling pattern carved by huge stones. 2、 On the third floor, Ionic columns are used to balance the proportion of doors, windows and walls. There is a veranda outside the window on the second floor. The window frame design of the whole wall is not the same, so that the balanced facade reveals a trace of "moving in static" artistic effect. The eaves on the top of the building are deep, the eaves are decorated with exquisite patterns, and the floor and wall inside the building are built with marble. The business hall adopts glass ceiling, which has good daylighting effect. After liberation, the oriental bank closed down. In 1956, it was managed by Shanghai Housing Administration Bureau and renamed Oriental building. It was used by the traffic department of Shanghai Public Security Bureau for a long time. Now it is used by China Everbright Bank Shanghai branch through replacement.
