With the continuous increase of British trade with China, the banking business continued to develop, and the capital increased rapidly. By the 1880s, it had become a British commercial bank second only to HSBC. In 1892, New Oriental Bank, the owner of the house at No.18 Bund (today's No.18 Shandong first road), went bankrupt due to poor management, and the real estate was bought by Macquarie Bank. This is a three story brick and wood structure of the British style building. In 1914, a fire broke out in the adjacent house Huizhong Hotel, which damaged the building. At that time, it was ready to be demolished and rebuilt. However, due to the outbreak of the first World War, the project was delayed until 1923.

Macquarie Bank building set up a branch in China to better support the trade of British businessmen in China, India, Australia and other places. Later, the company developed its business and issued banknotes, which were circulated in Shanghai, Tianjin, Hankou and other places.
When the Shanghai Branch of Macquarie Bank was founded, it was located in Beimen Street (now the section from Yan'an East Road to Renmin Road of Henan South Road), then moved to Jiangxi Road, and moved to 18 Bund in 1892. The building covers an area of 1755 square meters and a building area of 10065 square meters. The facade is composed of three horizontal sections and three vertical sections. The appearance is dignified, neat, rigorous and symmetrical, with the characteristics of Roman classical architectural style. The bottom wall surface is treated by flat granite with gap. From the second floor to the fourth floor, Ionic style columns are used in the middle, with a small balcony and window lintel on each side. The fourth to fifth floors have simple cornice lines.
In 1939, the British bank was merged into Macquarie Bank, making it more powerful.
