In 1881 (the seventh year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty), Fenshui overflowed and two Confucian temples in Xijie were destroyed.
In 1882 (the eighth year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty), Zhang Zhidong, then governor of Shanxi Province, proposed to build a new building on the ruins of Chongshan Temple destroyed by fire. It consists of pavilions, halls, gates, verandahs and ancestral halls. The former Chongshan temple is more magnificent, solemn, elegant and elegant than the original one.
In 1919 (8 years of the Republic of China), it was established as the provincial library museum. In 1927, it was renamed "Shanxi Provincial Public Education Center". During this period, the Dacheng hall dedicated to Confucius was changed into an "exhibition room for ancient gifts and musical instruments"; the majestic Dacheng gate was changed into an "auditorium lecture hall". Other temples are reading rooms, stacks, activity rooms and exhibition rooms.
In 1937, the Japanese attacked Taiyuan. After the fall of Taiyuan, the puppet Taiyuan municipal government renamed the Confucian Temple "Shanxi Xinmin Education Museum".
In 1953, after the founding of new China, it was changed into Shanxi Provincial Museum. For the protection of the Confucian temple and other reasons, the Cultural Relics Bureau of Shanxi Province built on the Confucian temple.

History of Confucian Temple
Shanxi folk custom museum is our former Confucian temple in Taiyuan. This was the site of Chongshan temple, where the Confucian temple was moved in 1882. In 2003, Shanxi folk custom museum was established.
From south to north, Taiyuan Confucian temple has Zhaobi, liujiaojingting, lingxingmen, dachengmen, dachengdian, dongxiwei and chongshengci. The heart of the courtyard is broad and the ancient trees are towering. It has been protected to a certain extent.
As a museum, the Confucian temple has been opened to the public. The main exhibition hall is Dacheng hall and its East and West verandas. The exhibition covers the history of Shanxi, which is divided into ancient and modern parts. The whole exhibition reflects the important position of Shanxi's politics, economy, culture, military and other aspects in the history of China, and highlights the characteristics of Shanxi's people and culture, ancient construction and drama. For example, the Dacheng hall has been renovated: the tall statue of Confucius is awe inspiring, and all kinds of cultural relics are well displayed, most of which are placed in glass boxes and well protected.
Although the cultural relics in the exhibition hall are well protected, they are not ideal outside the exhibition hall. As a cultural relic storage point in Shanxi, there are a large number of Steles and small cultural relics in the courtyard of Confucian temple. These cultural relics are piled up in large quantities, but they are not classified and introduced, and there are no protection measures.
Although the Confucian temple is located in the center of the city, effective management and basically good surrounding environment have achieved certain results in the protection of the Confucian temple.
