Donghouding is the first peak of Yanshan Mountains (176.6 meters higher than Wuling Mountain), the highest peak in North Beijing. The vegetation is subalpine weed meadow, which is composed of perennial dicotyledons. It is mainly composed of Carex lanceolata, Polygonum viviparum meadow, Carex lanceolata, elm meadow and Trollius weed meadow. It is known as "aerial flower garden" and "hundred flower meadow". This is the largest and best preserved subalpine meadow landscape in northern part of the Great Wall. From June to August every year, the colors of wild flowers change every week, and there are beautiful flowers everywhere. Houding mountain is also rich in wildlife resources. There are many kinds of wild animals, such as leopard, wild boar, yellow sheep, fox, roe deer, badger and so on. There are more than 70 kinds of birds. The rare birds protected by the state include grey crane, pheasant, azalea, owl, mountain pigeon, etc. among them are a kind of peculiar "sky black bird" and "Rain Bird". The local mountain people can know the weather change according to the bird's call. Wild vegetables growing in houding mountain are well-known, especially Pteridium aquilinum, wild needle, bitter herbs and pheasant wings. There are also hazelnuts, pears, grapes, Rosa roxburghii Tratt and other wild fruits that can be picked everywhere, as well as more than 170 kinds of wild medicinal materials.
