Yapo well means mountain spring in Portuguese. It used to be the main water source of Macao. It was also close to the inner harbor. People lived there when there was a well. The early Portuguese of Macao lived here. Therefore, it is one of the oldest residential areas and one of the world cultural heritage sites in Macao. It is said that a mother-in-law of the Ming dynasty built a pool here to store mountain springs for residents to drink, so she called the pool yapo well.
The old Portuguese in Macao have a folk saying: "after drinking the water from yapo well, you can't forget Macao; either you can get married in Macao, or you can't come back." In order to preserve the cultural characteristics of the area, the Australian and Portuguese Governments have carried out a series of renovation projects, and the two banyan trees in yapojing have also been preserved.
Yapo jingqiandi
"Ya Po" or "a PO" means an old woman. Because "Ya" and "a" in Cantonese are homophones, many places named in Cantonese often exchange the words "Ya" and "a". The official name of Macao is yapo jingqiandi. "Yapo" means old woman. It is said that a mother-in-law of the Ming dynasty built a pool here to store mountain springs for residents to drink. The plane is basically rectangular, the building facade has decorative art style decorative lines, the entrance combines with the terrain, the exterior wall surface is painted with yellow and white decorative lines, the roof form is flat roof, and the structure is a mixed structure of brick wall and reinforced concrete. In order to preserve the historical color of the area, two hundred year old banyan trees are still preserved.
In order to preserve the cultural characteristics of this area, the Australian and Portuguese Governments have carried out a series of renovation projects. Two hundred year old banyan trees in yapojing have been preserved, and classical street lamps have been added, and stone pavement has been replaced with marble. The reconstruction project was completed in January 1996, leaving behind the European style of the buildings in front of yapo well and nearby.
