Yuandang lake is the only artificial lake in Xiamen City, with a water surface area of 1.5 square kilometers. In the center of the lake is the beautiful Egret Island. Flowers, green trees, grass and winding paths set off modern buildings.
Yundang Lake
Yundang lake, formerly known as Yundang port, is located in the southwest of Xiamen Island. It used to be a bay connected with the sea and used as a home port wharf. From then on, Yuandang port became an inner lake with an area of 1.7 square kilometers.
Yuandang lake is like a light ribbon as bright as glass, crossing almost half of Xiamen Island, while the island in the middle of the lake is like a shining pearl inlaid in Yuandang lake. During the day, groups of egrets fly into the sky from the small island in the center of Yuandang lake. The green water reflects the graceful and graceful posture of egrets, as well as the tall and majestic modern buildings beside the lake, forming a beautiful watercolor painting.
Development history
In the early 1970s, in order to reclaim land from the sea, a 1700 meter long seawall was built here. Since then, Yuandang Bay has become a closed inner lake.
With the development of economy, the population and factories around the lake increase greatly.
In particular, before 1980, the infrastructure of Xiamen municipal facilities was weak, and the sewage was completely discharged into the natural water body along the open ditch according to the natural terrain without any treatment facilities. As a result, the domestic sewage of hundreds of thousands of residents within 37 square kilometers around the lake and the industrial wastewater of more than 300 factories were directly discharged into the lake without treatment.
By the late 1980s, the pollution of Yuandang lake was becoming more and more serious, with piles of garbage, overgrown weeds, black and smelly water, and breeding of mosquitoes and flies.
The bad environment has destroyed the ecological balance of the lake area, resulting in the disappearance of fish and shrimp, the departure of egrets, and the passing of passers-by.
The pollution problem of Yundang lake has aroused great concern of Xiamen citizens. The municipal Party committee and government attached great importance to it and formulated a comprehensive treatment plan. In September 1988, the proposal of "accelerating the comprehensive treatment of Yundang Lake" was adopted at the fourth session of the Ninth National People's Congress of Xiamen.
Since then, all previous governments have attached great importance to the environmental restoration and management of Yundang lake.
From the end of 1980s to the comprehensive renovation of Yundang Lake in 1999, Xiamen has invested 350 million yuan to gradually transform Yundang lake into a good place for people's leisure and entertainment.
In 2013, the water area of Yuandang Lake District is about 1.6 square kilometers, and the green area is about 315000 square meters. The surrounding area of Yuandang Lake District has become the political, financial and cultural center of Xiamen city.
After nearly 20 years of efforts, the ecological balance of the lake area has been gradually restored, and the egrets are flying on the lake again, realizing the goal of "harnessing Yundang lake and protecting the Western sea area".
Today, the lake has become a green pearl in the city, a popular cultural and leisure tourism area and a "city card" of Xiamen.
