School history

Born in the civil war, Donghai university is full of bright and elegant style of study, which makes the history of Donghai University extremely precious. Through the long tradition of the Republic of China and academic heritage, it pioneered the process of higher education in Taiwan and depicted the blueprint of Taiwan's first private university.

In the past hundred years, the Christian Church has founded 13 top universities in Chinese mainland, which basically covered the backbone of the education system of the Republic of China. They include Yanjing University (now Peking University and China University of political science and law), Jinling University (now Nanjing University), Lingnan University (now Sun Yat sen University and South China University of Technology), Huazhong University (now central China Normal University), Zhijiang University (now Zhijiang campus of Zhejiang University), St. John University (now East China University of political science and law and East China Normal University), and Hujiang University (now Shanghai University of science and Technology) It is composed of three parts: University of technology, Qilu University (now Baotuquan campus of Shandong University), West China Union University (now West China Campus of Sichuan University), Jinling Women's College of Arts and Sciences (now Nanjing Normal University), Soochow University (now Suzhou University), Fujian Union University (now Fujian Normal University) and South China Women's College of Arts and Sciences (now Fujian South China Women's Vocational College).

In 1950, based on the actual needs, the educational circles and missionaries in Taiwan jointly applied to the board of directors of China Christian universities to resume running schools in Taiwan, in order to continue the education of Missionary Universities in China and inherit the fine traditions of 13 missionary universities in mainland China.

In 1953, dadushan, Xitun District, Taichung City, was selected as the campus by the Education Department of the Taiwan authorities and the joint board of higher education of the Christian Church. It was named "Donghai University". It means "to the east of the sea" to demonstrate the idea of inheriting the style of study in Chinese mainland universities.

On November 11, 1953, US Vice President Nixon personally presided over the groundbreaking ceremony of Donghai University. Since then, I.M. Pei, Mr. Chen qikuan and Mr. Zhang Zhaokang have been invited to take charge of the campus design and actively carry out the construction of the campus.

The first freshmen were recruited in 1955, with Mr. Zeng Yunong (great grandson of Zeng Guofan, a famous minister in the late Qing Dynasty) as the first president. At the beginning, there were only two colleges of literature and science, with 200 students. The founding ceremony will be held on November 2, which will be the anniversary of the school.

In 1958, the Institute of technology was established.

In 1976, the business school was set up (later renamed the school of management).

In 1980, the school of agriculture and law was established (later renamed as the Academy of Social Sciences).

In 2007, the school of creative design and art was established, and the second teaching area, the new music department and the new art department, which are located next to the farm, have been completed and put into use. All the departments of the school of management have moved to the new building of the second campus, as well as the new student dormitory and comprehensive activity building under construction.

In 2008, Boya college, a new educational system, officially enrolled students. The idea of Boya college originated from the small class teaching characteristics of Donghai in the early stage. With the goal of "based on Donghai and looking at the world", Boya college recruits students with excellent academic performance and special expertise from various departments, and the students live together and arrange full-time tutors for diversified after-school guidance. At the time of graduation, the school will assist the students at home and abroad in their further studies or employment, just like the employment guarantee class, which completely subverts the original meaning of liberal arts education that "involved in general knowledge and intellectual technology, focusing on the transmission of knowledge, rather than specialized or professional technology".

In 2009, the law school was established.

Donghai University actively develops "the second teaching area", and will combine with the first teaching group and other learning groups, cooperate with the promotion of education, enterprise lectures, vocational training center, innovation and education center, etc., to become an important window to the outside world, effectively enhance industry university cooperation, drive and assist economic development, which can be called the largest campus construction in Donghai in recent years. Among them, the important construction of the second teaching area also plans student dormitories Teachers' dormitory and retired staff dormitory, gymnasium, etc.

In May 2013, the future events Exchange announced the evaluation results of "Taiwan's best university", "Taiwan's university social contribution" and "Taiwan's university internationalization". In 2014, the international business management degree program (English class) of International College was added.

In February 2018, the school of management won the AACSB International Certification and became the top 5% business management school in the world.

Campus related

School name

At the beginning of its establishment, the school proposed the names of Yushan, Xiehe and Sao Paulo. Because the school was located on the east side of the Taiwan Strait, it was later named "Haidong". Mr. Ling Chunsheng suggested that the name "Donghai" would be better, so he decided. The English name of the university is "Tunghai University", abbreviated as Thu.

The motto of Donghai university is "seeking truth, trusting and practicing", which originates from the educational philosophy: truth is the body, believing in behavior and using. It's the way of heaven. It's the way of human relations. Believe in yourself and act in others. The group does not destroy itself, and the group does not usurp itself.
