Kaifeng ancient Guanyin temple is located on the East Street of finance hall, the main street. It is 86 meters wide from east to west and 150 meters long from south to north. It covers an area of 21 Mu and a construction area of 5517 square meters. It was built in Tang Dynasty and flourished in song and Yuan Dynasties. In Ming Dynasty, it was the incense courtyard of Zhu long, the fifth son of Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang of Ming Dynasty, adjacent to the ancient Baiyi Pavilion. The ancient Baiyi pavilion was first built in the reign of Zhou Qianyou (948-950) after the Five Dynasties. It has a history of more than 1000 years. The ancient Guanyin Temple includes the ancient Baiyi Pavilion.
In 1925, master Jingyan was entrusted by Taixu, a modern monk, to Kaifeng, Henan Province to promote Buddhism. Under the protection of the social celebrities, he set up a Buddhist Society in Henan Province on the site of the ancient Guanyin temple, and invited Taixu, Cizhou, Yinshun, Daoyuan and other eminent monks to preach here, which had a profound influence. In 1978, the ancient Guanyin temple was approved by the people's Government of Henan Province as the first batch of Buddhist activity places. The Temple belongs to the Linji sect of Zen Buddhism. At present, it mainly promotes the Pure Land Sect, with 46 permanent staff. It once became the seat of Henan Buddhist Association in 1980, with master Jingyan as its president.
The ancient Guanyin temple has some imitative Qing architectures, such as Shanmen hall, Yuantong hall, Daxiong hall, Wofo hall, Sansheng hall, Dashi hall, etc. In the temple, there is a statue of Avalokitesvara with thousands of hands and eyes carved from ginkgo wood in the northern and Southern Dynasties, which is a first-class cultural relic.
