It is the largest imperial examination hall in China. In its heyday, there were only 20644 examination houses, plus hundreds of official rooms, dining rooms, warehouses, and miscellaneous service rooms, covering an area of more than 300000 square meters. Jiangnan Gongyuan
Jiangnan Gongyuan, also known as Nanjing Gongyuan and Jiankang Gongyuan, is located in the east of the Confucius Temple Academy in Qinhuai District of Nanjing city. It is the largest and most influential imperial examination hall in Chinese history. It is also one of the three ancient buildings in the Confucius Temple area and an important part of the Qinhuai scenery belt of Confucius Temple. It is the largest imperial examination center in ancient China. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties alone, more than half of the country's officials came from Jiangnan imperial examination center, known as "the cradle of ancient Chinese officials".
Jiangnan Gongyuan was first built in 1168, the fourth year of Qiandao in the Southern Song Dynasty. After renovation and expansion, it reached its peak in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. During the reign of Tongzhi in the Qing Dynasty, there were 20644 examination houses, which could accept more than 20000 examinees at the same time. In addition, there were hundreds of ancillary buildings, covering an area of more than 300000 square meters. In 1905, Yuan Shikai and Zhang Zhidong asked the Qing government to stop the imperial examination, so as to promote schools and promote practical learning. From then on, Jiangnan academy ended its historical mission. During the period from its completion to the abolition of the imperial examination in the late Qing Dynasty, Jiangnan Gongyuan transported more than 800 top scholars, more than 100000 Jinshi, and more than one million Juren to the country. Tang Bohu, Zheng Banqiao, Wu Jingzi, Shi Naian, Weng Tonghe, Zhang Jian, Chen Duxiu and other celebrities of the Ming and Qing dynasties all came from this. We can imagine the prosperity of Jinling culture.
The Chinese imperial examination Museum, built on the basis of Jiangnan Gongyuan, is the only professional museum in China that reflects the content of Chinese imperial examination system. It is also the center of Chinese imperial examination system, the cultural center of Chinese imperial examination and the cultural relics collection center of Chinese imperial examination. Some of the open venues include the underground floor of the museum, the Mingyuan building, Zhigong hall, Hao she, tablet inscriptions and the Kui Hall of Nanyuan Guangge, including 11 exhibition halls.
