The copper quality of the bell is strong and weighs 12500 kg Each stroke lasts one minute and fifty seconds. " In 1959, Shengji temple was abandoned, and the bell was placed beside the road. In 1978, the bronze bell was moved to Fenghuang Castle opposite Baoguo temple, and a pavilion was built to cover and maintain it. On Fenghuang castle, the towering pines and cypresses blocking the sun, the solemn and elegant octagonal zanjian Bell Pavilion, and the ancient forest of Steles surrounded by more than 100 inscriptions, are integrated with the ancient and dignified giant bell, integrating the natural beauty and humanistic beauty.
Introduction to scenic spots
Shengji evening bell is one of the traditional "ten sceneries of Emei" and the only cultural landscape.
Shengji temple, the ancient Cifu temple, is located 2.5km south of Emei city. It is the largest temple in the mountain with a quiet and ancient environment. There are two ancient Huangjue trees outside the temple, surrounded by several people. Looking from Baoguo temple, the two Huangjue trees look like an elephant. There are many cultural relics in the temple, such as the bronze statue of Puxian riding elephant, the Eight Trigram bronze bell, and the copper tower. It is also called Shengji bronze bell. It was cast in the Jiajing period of Ming Dynasty and is a Zen master of other biographies The weight of the bell copper is 25000 Jin.
This "Shengji evening bell" has twelve leaves, shaped like lotus petals. On each petal are carved twelve Branches of the earth, which symbolize the cycle of time and space. Therefore, it is also called "Lotus bell" and "Bagua bell".
According to the inscription of the bell, the bell was made in 1564. The next year, it was transported to the Hongxi bridge of Emei Mountain to polish and chisel the characters. In the first year of Longqing of Ming Dynasty (1567), it was suspended in the old treasure house of Shengji temple, known as the "bell king of Bashu".
Tan Zhongyue, a poet of the Qing Dynasty, went to Emei Mountain after painstaking efforts. He studied the mountains, mileage, temples, location, cottages, Linquan scenic spots and wonderful scenery in detail. He consulted ancient books, collected historical materials, spent three years working hard, drew 64 pictures and wrote 46 poems. He also put forward the brilliant view of "ten are the best scenery in Emei Mountain" -- Shengji "Evening bell" is one of the ten scenic spots of Emei, and Tan Zhongyue specially wrote a poem for it: where is the sound of the evening bell? The ancient temple is still famous. Even if we talk about the special character of immortals, we should also be like a clear heart.
Wang RI of Qing Dynasty once praised Shengji Wanzhong in his poem Ju Zhong: "when did all the gold come from? Long as the Dragon singing, scattered dawn smoke. The Mountain Gate of Liuzhen is open, and the sound is high and clear, and the mountain top is high. "
According to Mount Emei, which was published in 1935 and compiled by Zhao xunbo, it is said that the bell was struck on the night of the second day of the lunar calendar. There are 18 slow strokes and 18 fast strokes. Each stroke is followed by a chant of the bell. Every four words and every four sentences are struck. Every hundred strokes begin and end (say 108 strokes). Each stroke lasts one minute and 50 seconds. If you hear it near you, it will sound strong; if you hear it far away, it will sound clear. "
In 1936, Liu Shangxi published the detailed notes of Emei tour guides, which also said: "the first night of the new moon every month is to knock, only 24 times in a year. The so-called late bell, because the monk at nine o'clock after holding the lamp upstairs, mouth chanting Sutra, popular cloud bell sentence. When you read a sentence at the beginning, you knock the Bell once, four words for each sentence. When you read Bi, you knock slowly. When you enter, you knock every word. The faster you read, the more urgent you knock. Slow 18, urgent 18, percussion to three times, said three percussion, each percussion must recite the full text, three times percussion bell, a total of 108 percussion. The sound of the bell is extraordinary
In addition, the 108 strokes of the evening bell are related to the phenological calendar of ancient China. The phenological calendar takes five days as one period and three periods as one Qi. There are 24 solar terms in a year, totally 72 periods. Each phenological phenomenon corresponds to each other, which is called "Houying". The sum of 12 months, 24 solar terms and 72 solar terms is 108.
In 1959, Shengji Temple collapsed, and the bronze bell was also placed on one side of the road; in 1978, the relevant cultural departments of Emei Mountain moved the bronze bell to Fenghuang Castle opposite Baoguo temple, and built a pavilion to cover and maintain it; the good man slightly modified the former poem to show its beauty: the Phoenix castle is full of cypresses, and the bell is still long at night. Even if we talk about the different beliefs of the monks and the common people, we can feel the clearness in our hearts.
Folklore
At that time, after casting the bronze bell, biezhuan Zen master hung it on the bell tower of Shengji temple, and told his disciples: "I'll travel outside. After three days, you can ring the bell. Remember!"
But soon after the monk left the temple, a little monk was eager to listen to the bell. Regardless of his master's advice, he swung the hammer and struck it. With a "Dang", the loud bell reverberated in the air. The sound of mountains and valleys was heard more and more far, all the way to the monk's ears.
At this time, the old monk just walked out of 30 Li. When he heard the bell, his face changed greatly. He said with regret, "if I ring the bell three days later, the bell will follow me to the place where I have been three days away."
