After the Xi'an Incident, Zhang Xueliang personally sent Chiang Kai Shek to Nanjing on December 25, 1936. On the 26th, Zhang was placed under house arrest; on the 31st, Zhang Xueliang was sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment. On the same day, Jiang petitioned the national government for "pardon" on the ground of "having the courage to repent and pleading guilty in Beijing". On January 4, 1937, Zhang was pardoned by the Nanjing National Government, but he was still handed over to the Military Commission for "strict control".

On February 17, Zhang Xueliang wrote a letter to Yang Hucheng and the generals of the Northeast Army, encouraging them to "work hard to kill the enemy for the country and restore the land for the northeast.
