The former site museum of Qingdao German style prison is a characteristic Museum integrating Castle style prison buildings and judicial brigade buildings. The prison building consists of five cells and a workshop. The "Ren" prison, the former site of Qingdao German prison, was built in 1900. The rest of the buildings were built in the 1920s and 1930s. The complex was used as a prison (detention house) from 1900 to 1995. During the period of German occupation of Qingdao (1897-1914), it was a prison for non Chinese prisoners in Germany. Because of its rich historical and cultural value, it has been approved by Shandong provincial government as one of 345 provincial historical excellent buildings. Many German experts can't help sighing when they see the "European prison": it's hard to see such a building in Germany. Its main buildings include German castle style buildings (ren prison), kitchens, bathrooms, stables, Yi prison, wells, lookout towers, prison factories, etc. Such a complete prison can be preserved, which is the only one in the modern history of Chinese prison, and it is rare in the world.
Qingdao Germany Prison Museum Site
Located at No.23 Changzhou Road, Qingdao, the former German prison site museum was founded in 1900. It is the only unique building complex with Castle style architecture as the main body in the modern history of Chinese prison. The German prison Museum, formerly known as "European prison", is the earliest and most complete colonial prison in China. The former site covers an area of 11.8 mu, with a construction area of 8297.5 square meters.

Development history

During the second period of Japanese occupation of Qingdao (1938-1945), the "benevolence" and "righteousness" prison was the Japanese Navy's prison, the Japanese army added water prison in the "benevolence" prison, and the "courtesy", "wisdom" and "faith" prison and workshop were the pseudo Qingdao local court detention house;
After the surrender of Japan in 1945, it was the detention house of Qingdao district court, where Japanese war criminals and traitors were detained in the "benevolence" and "faith" prison; after the liberation of Qingdao in 1949, it was the detention house of Qingdao Municipal People's court;
He was a detention center of Qingdao Public Security Bureau in 1955 and moved out in 1995. In December 2004, the Qingdao Municipal People's government decided to build it into a legal education base in Qingdao, and the comprehensive management committee of social security in Qingdao will organize and implement the renovation and exhibition work. In 2006, the former site of Qingdao German prison was announced as a national key cultural relic protection unit by the State Council. In order to open up a new scenic spot for in-depth historical tourism in Qingdao and educate Qingdao citizens on patriotism, the European prison has been renovated since March 2005. The renovated European prison has been officially named Qingdao German prison site museum and opened to the public on April 30, 2007.
