Taishan shadow play is an ancient traditional folk art. Taishan shadow play is also known as Renzi play and shadow picking. Form of performance
There are many ways to perform shadow puppets in China, but generally more than one person is required to perform in cooperation. The proverb "seven tight, eight loose, nine stop" is popular in the shadow puppet industry, which means that eight people are usually required to work together when performing shadow puppets. If there are seven people, the whole backstage will be tense. If there are nine people, there will be people idle.
Taishan shadow play is the most unique way of performing. A play needs two people at most, one for accompaniment, one for manipulation, and one for performance when necessary. This is the ancient unique skill of shadow play: "ten not idle". The so-called "ten not idle" refers to the shadow play performance, "thinking of words in the head, singing songs in the mouth, dancing people in the hands, and stepping on the mallet under the feet", which mobilizes the whole body, and one person has several duties to complete the performance of the whole play alone, which requires the performer to have a good performance background. "Ten not idle" has a history of more than 1700 years. According to the statistics of China's Ministry of culture, only Mr. Fan Zheng'an, the sixth generation inheritor of Taishan shadow play, has inherited and preserved the unique skills of shadow play.

Taishan shadow play has a long history. It was recorded in the ancient book taotaowu Xianping of Ming Dynasty, which has a history of 600 years. There is a folk saying that if you climb Mount Tai, you can't travel without watching shadow play. If you don't watch shadow play, you don't know etiquette and righteousness.
Taishan shadow play has been developed and perfected through successive generations, and won the title of "national intangible cultural heritage" in 2007. This traditional form of dramatic expression has come into people's eyes again, and has successively won the "Cultural Heritage Award" and "best performance award of China Federation of literary and art circles Folk Art Expo", At the national intangible cultural heritage exhibition held in Beijing in 2007, Taishan shadow puppet won the highest award of "cultural heritage day award of the Ministry of culture of China". Taishan shadow puppet, known as the "living fossil" of Taishan culture, has performed many times for national, provincial and municipal leaders, as well as important guests and tourism groups at home and abroad.
In 2011, it was included in the world-class intangible cultural heritage "China shadow play" list. Fan Zheng'an, the only inheritor of "ten not idle" unique skills at that time, was also rated as "excellent inheritor of China's intangible cultural heritage" and "Top Ten Excellent inheritors of Shandong Province".
Fan Zheng'an, the sixth generation inheritor of Taishan shadow puppet, was cordially received by Premier Wen Jiabao. The unique Chinese shadow puppet skills performed for Premier Wen Jiabao were praised by Premier Wen Jiabao as "Chinese unique skills" and Li Changchun as "real experts". In the production of Taishan shadow puppet, the material is pure donkey skin, the knife technique is concise and bright, and the coloring contrast is strong, which contains the forthright folk sentiment of Shandong people. There are many fighting scenes in Taishan shadow play, so the filmmakers have to be solid and durable, and try their best to generalize in carving. Most of the figures are realistically shaped, with simple knives, bold and forthright, which is similar to the freehand brushwork in Chinese painting, reflecting the honest and open-minded character of Taishan people. In terms of color contrast, red, green, yellow, purple and other traditional folk colors are often used. The production of Taishan shadow puppet strictly follows the ancient method, which is divided into 10 steps and 21 processes. Each shadow puppet is hand carved with more than 3000 knives.
Taishan shadow puppet series crafts are divided into four categories, including clothing, frames, decorations and albums, with more than 60 varieties.
