Marshall house
Located at NO.5 Ninghai Road, Gulou District, Nanjing City, the former site of Marshall mansion was originally a villa built by Jincheng bank in 1935. It was designed by Tong Yi and later purchased by Zhang Qun, who was then Minister of foreign affairs of the national government. It was later given to the German Embassy. After the Japanese army occupied Nanjing in December 1937, it was used as the headquarters of the International Committee of Nanjing safe area for refugees With luxurious facilities, Rabe, who was then chairman of the committee, called it "our palace" and the words "Ninghai Road 5" often appeared in the committee reports and letters included in Rabe's diary.
In 1945, George Cartwright Marshall, as the special envoy of the president of the United States to China, came to China to mediate the relations between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party. In May of the next year, the national government was still in Nanjing, which was used as Marshall's residence. The three sides of the country, the Communist Party and the United States had many talks and negotiations here. Until the mediation failed in November, Marshall returned to China the next month.
The building is a two-story brick concrete structure, which adopts the archaic style of Xieshan and paved with glazed tiles. In the south, there is a spacious courtyard, in which the path is paved with red, black and white pebbles to form four decorative patterns of eagle, lion, tiger and bird. There are many leaky windows on the wall of the courtyard. At present, it is the residence of the headquarters of the Nanjing Military Region, and the iron door is closed at ordinary times.
