Shen Congwen is a famous modern writer and a representative of Beijing style novels. In 1931, Shen Congwen came to Qingdao as a lecturer in the Chinese Department of Qingdao University. During his teaching time, he lived at No. 3, Fushan road. Shen Congwen has created many famous works, such as Autobiography of Congwen, Ding Ling, Xiaojing under the moon, and the painting of eight steeds. Shen Congwen himself once said that his stay in Qingdao "was the period when I had the strongest working ability and relatively mature writing skills in my life.".

On December 28, 1902, Mr. Shen Congwen was born in a typical southern ancient courtyard in Zhongying street of Fenghuang ancient city. Siheyuan was built by Shen Hongfu, the grandfather of Mr. Shen Congwen (who was the governor of Guizhou in the Qing Dynasty), after the old houses were demolished in the fifth year of tongzhi (1866).
Shen Congwen's former residence was listed as a key cultural relic protection unit of the provincial people's Government in 1991. The former residence now displays Shen's ink, manuscripts, relics and portraits, which has become one of the most attractive cultural landscapes of Phoenix. On May 25, 2006, Shen Congwen's former residence in Fenghuang County, Hunan Province was approved by the State Council to be listed in the Sixth Batch of national key cultural relics protection units.
The former residence, built in 1866, is a quadrangle building with timber structure, covering an area of 600 square meters. It is divided into two buildings with 10 rooms. About Shen Congwen
Shen Congwen (1902-1988), a famous Chinese writer, was originally named Shen yuehuan. His pen names are Xiu yunyun, Jiachen, shangguanbi, xuanruo, etc. his nickname is Maolin and his name is Chongwen. From Fenghuang County, Hunan Province, her grandmother Liu is Miao, her mother Huang Suying is Tujia, and her grandfather Shen Hongfu is Han. Therefore, Shen Congwen's national identity can be any one of these three nationalities, but Shen Congwen himself loves the Miao people more. There are many descriptions of the Miao people's customs in his literary works.
Shen Congwen is a writer and a researcher of historical relics. At the age of 14, he joined the army and wandered in the border areas of Hunan, Sichuan and Guizhou. He began to write literature in 1924, wrote and published novels such as the long river and the border town, and taught in Qingdao University from 1931 to 1933. After the outbreak of the Anti Japanese War, he went to the Southwest Associated University to teach. In 1946, he returned to Peking University to teach. After the founding of the people's Republic of China, he worked in the Museum of Chinese history and the Institute of history of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, mainly engaged in the study of ancient Chinese history. He died in Beijing in 1988.
