history
"Lingxing gate" is a archway type wooden or stone building on the central axis of the Confucian temple. Lingxing is also called Tiantian star. According to the history of the later Han Dynasty, Emperor Gaozu of the Han Dynasty offered sacrifices to heaven and prayed for the year, and ordered him to sacrifice tiantianxing. Tiantianxing is the left corner of longsu, one of the 28 constellations. Because the corner is the gate of heaven and the gate is shaped like a window lattice, it is called Lingxing gate. When the emperor offered sacrifices to heaven, he first offered sacrifices to the stars. Yuan Mei said in the essay of Suiyuan: "later generations prayed for the year with the spirit star of Han Dynasty, which had nothing to do with Confucius Temple. They also saw that the door shape was the window spirit, so they changed it to lattice." In Song Dynasty, Lingxing gate, also known as "Wutou gate", was built in Confucian temple to symbolize worshiping Confucius as heaven. The Lingxing gate in the Confucian temple appeared after the 15th year of Hongwu, the emperor of Ming Dynasty. It symbolizes that offering sacrifices to Confucius is like respecting heaven. Later, people interpreted Lingxing as tianzhenxing, Wenquxing and Kuixing. The ancients believed that "the master of Tianzhen star is celebrated by the scholars, and his essence is the God of Lingxing". Naming the gate of Confucius Temple with Lingxing symbolizes that Confucius can be compared with Tianzhen star, which implements education and cultivates talents in the sky. It also means that scholars from all over the world gather here and unify under the door of Confucianism.
