In the Yuan Dynasty, it was the office of the governor of daosu County, Guangdong Province; in the Ming Dynasty, it was the office of the commander of the capital; it was once the palace of Shaowu regime in the Southern Ming Dynasty; in the Qing Dynasty, it was the office of Pingnan Prince and the Office of the governor of Guangdong Province. At the beginning of the Republic of China, there was no public park in Guangzhou. In 1917, Sun Yat Sen proposed to create a park, which was designed by Yang Xizong, who graduated from Cornell University. The park was built in 1918 and named "the first municipal park". It opened on October 12, 1921.
At that time, Sun Yat Sen made many speeches to the masses to promote the theory of democratic revolution. On August 12, 1923, it announced the first park tour rules in China. In 1924, China's first large-scale "March 8" International Women's Day commemoration activity was also held in the park. In 1966, it was officially changed into people's Park and was still in use. As the first free park to demolish the wall, people's Park has naturally become a leisure sports place for nearby residents. It's really rare to have such a "green lung" in the residential center of Guangzhou.
Style facilities
The park adopts the layout of Italian pattern garden, in the form of square symmetry. The garden is full of rich local characteristics with towering ancient trees and hedgerow flowers. There are white stone lions carved in the early Qing Dynasty and a music pavilion built in 1926. After that, bonsai garden, children's playground, old people's pavilion, open-air music teahouse, exhibition building and other facilities were successively added. In 1987, six sculptures were built, including "the age of beacon", "Lu Xun", "Xian Xinghai", "warrior", "bride" and "coconut girl". According to the needs of the theme, the statues are made of bronze, Huanggang stone, white marble, red powder stone and other materials, which makes the works more full of vitality and artistic appeal and constitutes a unique landscape of the park.
