Chishui River, or Chishui, is a tributary of the upper reaches of the Yangtze River in China. It is named for its high sediment content and red yellow water color. In ancient times, it had the names of Chishui River, anleshui River and dabashui river. It was in the border area of Yunnan, Guizhou and Sichuan provinces. It originates from doujiazhai Shanqing, Changba Town, Zhenxiong County, Yunnan Province, and its upstream is called Yudong river. It flows eastward to Tiziyan, which is at the junction of Sichuan, Yunnan and Guizhou provinces. Its water volume increases. It passes through qixingguan district and Jinsha County of Bijie City, Guizhou Province, and the border of Xuyong county and Gulin County of Sichuan Province, and then enters Renhuai City, Xishui County and Chishui City, and Hejiang County of Sichuan Province, and enters the Yangtze River. )The drainage area is 20400 square kilometers.
Three quarters of the Chishui River Basin is in the mountains, so Chishui River is the only unpolluted tributary of the Yangtze River in China. The river is crystal clear, with steep and dangerous rapids on both sides. Hydropower reserves are 1.27 million kilowatts, but no dam has been built on its main stream. Under Baiyangping, it can be navigable for 5-165 tons annually and seasonally.
Chishui River, because of the story of the Red Army of Chinese workers and peasants crossing Chishui, is rich in fine wine in the basin, and is known as "hero River" and "fine wine River".
Name evolution
Chishui River, known as "Heshui" in Qin and Han Dynasties, is named because its basin is one of the prefectures of Nanyi. From the later Han Dynasty to the two Jin Dynasties, it was called "dabashui" and "anleshui".
In the Eastern Jin Dynasty, it was called bafu (Fu) water;
In the tenth year of Tang Tianbao (715), the name of "red Cobra River" appeared for the first time in the proclamation for the southern expedition. "Red" person, "flow volume sediment, every rain rise, water color muddy red, the river is also named.". "Cobra" refers to poisonous snake. It's because there are poisonous snakes everywhere in the muddy river. In fact, the word "Cobra" in "red Cobra River" should take the meaning of "Cobra": thunder. It refers to the roaring thunder of the Chishui River. In the 15th year of Hongwu in Ming Dynasty (1382), Chishui Wei was set up in Xuyong, Sichuan Province, and the name of "red Cobra" was changed to "Chishui". The word "Cobra" in "red Cobra River" should take the meaning of "Cobra": thunder. It refers to the roaring thunder of the Chishui River.
In addition, there are many different appellations for different sections of Chishui River. For example, "Gulin county annals" contains: "once known as Qilang water, Zhixi.".
"Renhuai county annals" contains: "Qing Dynasty once called Renhuai river.".
According to the records of Xishui County, "Taiping Huanyu Ji and Sichuan Tongzhi shanchuanmen are called Anle River and Xiaojiang River; some river sections were named zhailang River (Miao zhailang lived here in ancient times), Renshui River and Zhijiang River".
According to the list of Hejiang County, it is called "Zhixi" in the records of scenic spots.
Chishui River is known as Maotai River in Renhuai county. Liying Township section is also called Napo River.
