Because of the flood in the middle of Ming Dynasty, people prayed for eternal peace. The gentry donated money to build Yongzhen pagoda, which was intended to suppress evil and protect peace. Architecture Overview
Yongzhen tower stands on the Bank of Ganshui river. According to the chart of Yongtai regiment in Qingjiang county annals in the ninth year of Tongzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty, "the small harbor in front of the city, at the end of Chenghua period of the Ming Dynasty, the water of Jiangxi Province rose sharply and burst, so it became a big river. Because of the water potential, Yongzhen tower was built to control the downstream.". At that time, the villagers built a nine storey tower and named it "Yongzhen tower" for the flood. It is a masonry structure. Hexagon, a total of 7 layers, from bottom to top layer by layer, 24 meters high. In 1891, the "Xinmao wind disaster" swept off the top of the tower and poured it into the estuary of the river. The villagers also donated money for renovation, from level 9 to level 7. The tower is still well preserved. The base of the tower is made of gray green granite. The platform is made of green bricks with inscriptions on it, such as "hongyongchangxiu", "hongyongchanghuigongxiu", "Yongzhen tower brick", etc. Each floor is 3 meters high, with 6 doors, three empty and three solid. The body of the tower is built with brick, and the wall is whitewashed. The eaves are made of green bricks. The upper part is covered with bluestone, and the upper part is carved as a warping. The lower part is hung with copper bells. The top layer is covered with bluestone, and the top copper cap is conical. In the center of the tower stands a towering fir column with a diameter of 80 cm, straight to the top of the tower. Each floor is equipped with four well shaped wooden frames with embedded wooden columns, so that the wooden columns are closely connected with the tower body. The original tower with floor, wooden ladder, has been abandoned. It was announced as a cultural relic protection unit in Zhangshu City in 1984.
