Dazhou Island, also known as YANWO Island, is located in the southeast of Wanning City, Hainan Province. It is the only national marine nature reserve on the south coastal line around the sea and the largest desert island on the south coastal line around the sea. In 1983, Wanning county established a county-level Nature Reserve in order to protect the swiftlet on Dazhou island.

In 1989, the State Oceanic Administration proposed the establishment of Island Marine Ecosystem nature reserve.

On September 30, 1990, the State Council approved Dazhou island as a national marine ecological climate nature reserve.

The ecosystem of Dazhou Island Nature Reserve is composed of island land ecosystem and marine ecosystem. There are 577 species of higher plants on the island, belonging to 121 families, There are 395 genera, especially 23 species endemic to Hainan. The rare and endangered plants under state or provincial key protection include Cycas hainanensis, Dracaena hainanensis, dafengzi, longan, litchi and Maocha. The precious Chinese herbal medicines include Jinbuhuan, honeysuckle, yam (Huaishan), etc.

According to statistics, there are more than 100 large caves on the island, and the largest with nests of swiftlets are "nanluo", "dark rock" and "Dajia". The bird's nests produced in the three places are thick, transparent and nutritious. They are the chief of bird's nests and used to be tributes in ancient times.

On Nanling Mountain, there are towering rocks, natural fissures, caves and lush vegetation all over the cliff. It is secluded and deep, providing a good place for swiftlets to inhabit and breed.
