brief introduction
Nantang bridge, a cultural relic protection unit in Qingpu District, is located in Chonggu Town, Qingpu District, Shanghai. It was built in the Ming Dynasty and rebuilt in 1698. The bridge is a three hole stone arch bridge, 22.2 meters long and 2.8 meters wide, with a medium span of 6.8 meters and an arch height of 4 meters. Both sides of the arch span 4 meters, 1.8 meters high.
Human history
There is no specific research on the date of the first construction of Nantang bridge. The original county and township annals all recorded that the bridge was "first built in the Ming Dynasty according to legend", but there is no material evidence, only the words "rebuilt in 1833" on the bridge. In 2004, Chonggu town was established as a city level health town. The relevant government departments sorted out the illegal construction on the side of the bridge, and found the character "built in the second year of Chongzhen in the Ming Dynasty" (1629 AD) on the bridge for the first time.
When the bridge was rebuilt, Xiatang of Hedong street in Chonggu town had not been completed yet, so the slope of Dongtu bridge of the bridge extended to qiaolongtangkou of Shangtang of Hedong street. After the reconstruction of Nantang bridge, Chonggu town became more prosperous. Merchants and squires vied to occupy the position by the bridge, built stone revetments, built houses and opened shops. In the early years of Guangxu, East Street formed a two-sided street with shops in Shangtang and Xiatang.
