Shedao was formed by long-term natural changes in a specific geographical environment. According to the analysis of its rock strata and lithofacies, it was about 1 billion years ago. Shedao and Liaodong Peninsula were originally linked together. The Mesozoic Yanshanian movement 100 million years ago and the Himalayan orogeny 10-20 million years ago produced the Liaohe fault and the Bohai Sea subsidence. At this stage, the Snake Island was formed in the Bohai Sea by the compressed boulders. At that time, Shedao was very small, only a fraction of what it is now. It took several years for the earth's crust to keep rising to form what it is now. Over the years, the Snake Island has formed a food chain in which snakes eat birds, birds eat insects, insects eat plants, and plants use bird manure as fertilizer, forming a complete ecosystem with snakes as the center. In the mid-1950s, according to the survey and statistics of Chinese scientists, there were 50000 to 100000 vipers on the Snake Island at that time. But in June 1958, a big fire broke out on the Snake Island, burning for four or five days in a row, and the whole plant on the Snake Island was almost reduced to ashes. A large number of snakes were burned and roasted, and the snake resources were seriously damaged. After reform and opening up, Snake Island and old fellow iron mountain were listed as national nature reserves. As for the origin of snakes on Shedao, the research shows that the snakes on the island came from the mainland, but they did not cross the sea from the mainland, nor were they brought to the island by fishing boats, but were the result of the changes of sea and land during the geological period. About several hundred million years ago, the sea level was much higher than today's. Liaodong Peninsula and Shedao were submerged in the sea. By 400 million years ago, this area began to land, Liaodong Peninsula and Shedao began to gradually expose to the sea. Later, after several crustal movements and sea level rise and fall, the current situation of Shedao was finally achieved. At present, the population of Agkistrodon halys in Shedao has increased from about 9000 at the beginning of the establishment of the reserve to more than 20000, and new achievements have been made in snake protection and scientific research.

Geography

Snake Island, 8 in 1981, approved the establishment of the first National Nature Reserve of environmental protection system in China, Liaoning old fellow National Nature Reserve. The old fellow is located in the 7 mile sea of West Lake, Dalian, which is located in the twin Island town of Lushunkou District, Lushun district, West Lake. The area is about 0.8 square kilometers. Shedao is an isolated island adjacent to the land, with the highest peak elevation of 216.9 meters. It is a one-sided mountain with a single structure of high in the West and low in the East. The landform types include marine erosion landform, marine accumulation landform and gravity accumulation landform, and the soil is brown soil. The vegetation is a secondary broad-leaved deciduous forest, mainly composed of trees and shrubs. There are mesophytic herbs mainly composed of grasses in the forest. Hawks and other Raptors are the natural enemies of Agkistrodon halys. The monsoon climate type in the middle latitude cold temperate zone is obviously affected by the monsoon and the ocean, with four distinct seasons and gentle changes. There is no intense heat in summer and no extreme cold in winter. Due to the lack of fresh water resources, rainwater should be intercepted artificially.

Qiandao Lake

Snake Island was originally named Wulong island. There are four snake pools on the island. There are pools, fountains, mounds, bushes, caves, hibernation rooms, etc. in the snake pool, there are more than 200 or 300 snakes of more than ten varieties, most of which are poisonous snakes, such as Agkistrodon acutus, Agkistrodon halys, Agkistrodon acutus, Zhuyeqing, cobra, etc. The managers raised them with frogs and mice. In the laboratory, they took snake venom, dissected snake gall for pharmaceutical and scientific experiments.
