Taipei Artist Village
Taipei International Art Village is located on Peiping East Road, Taipei ', So that busy city people in a corner of the city can also smell the breath of art.
brief introduction
Not far to the east of Taipei station, it used to be the idle Office of the maintenance and Labor Department of Taipei municipal government, which did not attract people's attention. However, if you pass by here again, it will be hard to miss the new artistic appearance of this four story building. There is today's Taipei International Art Village, the art space for artists to communicate with each other and open to the outside world.
Built in 1953, this ordinary looking building, which has been idle for many years, was put into operation in 2001 under the promotion of a plan called "reuse of idle space". In May 2003, the art village was officially commissioned by the "Taipei Cultural Foundation" to build an international exchange platform for art creators from all over the world.
As Su Yaohua, the "village head" and executive director of the "Taipei Cultural Foundation", said: the biggest feature here is that on the Art Village studio open day, artists' studios and other spaces are open to all tourists to enjoy and experience. Here, we don't have to look at the works of art with the mood of pilgrimage, but use the imagination of play to explore and observe every creation. Exhibition is not the biggest function of the art village, communication and interaction can maintain the vitality of the international art village.

There are 10 studios in the art village, which provide artists from all over the world to apply for 3-month "resident" creation. Su Yaohua said that the gathering of artists from all over the world is actually the main asset of the building. Each artist brings different art and culture from all over the world. They meet each other in this space for a short time, forming a dense network, which inspires brilliant sparks for art.
Each year, there are about 45 to 60 overseas artists and four Taiwanese artists working in the village. In the 12 Ping (about 10 square meters) studio, there are perfect living equipment and independent creation space, as well as professional equipment such as dance rehearsal room, darkroom and piano room, to meet the different needs of creators.
Among the many artists in the village, there are also literary celebrities from the mainland. Qian Gang, a famous writer, once settled here from November to December 2005. According to the introduction of the art village, during his stay in Taiwan, Qian Gang took "observing Taiwan and understanding Taiwan" as the main cultural axis and explored Taiwan's cultural context from the perspective of being a mainland cultural and intellectual person.
Su Yaohua said that the art promotion activities provided here include: artists' lectures, arranging village artists to hold slide lectures in the art village, presenting their creative ideas to the public, so as to make the public closer to the art works. There are also activities of creation workshops, where artists lead people to create. You can actually participate and become a part of creation.
For this reason, the art village regularly holds "artists' studio open day". On this day, the public can visit the artists' studio located on the upper floor, see how the artists create, and have close contact with the artists to better understand what art is. For those who often lament that they can't understand works of art, they can appreciate their works of art more after they face-to-face with artists and understand their creative process.
Su Yaohua said that in addition to monthly thematic performances and DIY art courses, the scope of art promotion has also expanded to the campus, allowing artists in the village to make speeches and demonstration teaching in Colleges and universities. In the future, she plans to go deep into remote areas, not limited to fixed points, hoping to achieve the concept of mobile art village.
