Meizhou Island
Meizhou Island, an island under the jurisdiction of Meizhou Town, Xiuyu District, Putian City, Fujian Province, is located 42 kilometers southeast of Putian City Center in Fujian Province, only 1.82 nautical miles away from the mainland. It is the second largest island in Putian City and the holy land of Mazu. Meizhou Island has a land area of 14.35 square kilometers, a population of 38000, an average annual temperature of 21 ℃ and a coastline of 30.4 kilometers. There are more than 30 islands, islets and reefs. It is 72 nautical miles away from Taichung port in Taiwan Province. The island is 9.6 km long from north to South and 1.3 km wide from east to west. The central part is plain and the coastline is 30.4 km long. Putian dialect is used in the whole town, including Wuqiu, with Wuqiu Township in Putian in the south.
Meizhou Island is known as "Penglai in the South". It has exciting Chaoyin of Meiyu, ancestral temple of Meizhou and "Oriental Hawaii" There are more than 30 scenic spots, such as jiubaolan golden beach and "little stone forest" geese tail strange stone. In 1988, Meizhou Island was established as a tourism economic zone open to the outside world in Fujian Province.
In 1992, Meizhou Island was approved as a national tourist resort by the State Council.
In 2010, Meizhou Island was listed as Meizhou Mazu culture ecological protection experimental zone by Fujian Provincial People's government.

Location context
Meizhou Island has belonged to Putian, Fujian Province since ancient times. It is in the middle of the west coast of Taiwan Strait, and in the north of Meizhou Bay Port, one of China's four major international transit ports determined by the Ministry of communications. It is about 9.6 km long from north to South and 1.3 km wide from east to west. The island is long and narrow from north to south, and shaped like an Emei, so it is called Meizhou.
