Zhao Tuo was the first king and emperor of Nanyue kingdom. He was in power from 203 to 137 BC. He was known as "King Wu of Nanyue" or "Emperor Wu of Nanyue". At the age of 19, he was granted the imperial sword to accompany the first emperor of Qin on his tour. In 219 BC, he was appointed deputy commander and led 500000 troops to fight in Lingnan. In 204 B.C., Nanyue kingdom was founded and named "King Wu of Nanyue". In 195 B.C., Emperor Gaozu of Han Dynasty officially granted him the title of "King Wu of Nanyue". During the period of empress Lu, the conflict between Han and Vietnam intensified. Empress Lu issued a ban on the sale of iron and other articles in the border area with South Vietnam, and excavated and destroyed the grave of Zhao Tuo's parents. Zhao Tuo sent troops to resist and counterattack to Hunan area, then called himself Emperor and called himself "Nanyue Wudi". After the death of empress Lu, the army of the Han Dynasty stopped attacking.
In 179 BC, Emperor Wen of Han Dynasty succeeded to the throne. In order to appease Zhao Tuo, the king of Nanyue, he built a tomb of Zhao Tuo's ancestors in the southeast of today's Zhao lingpu village and sent people to guard it. This is the origin of the name of zhaolingpu. In the same year, Zhao Tuo removed the imperial title and returned to the Han Dynasty, still known as the "king of Nanyue". Until the time of emperor Jing of Han Dynasty, Zhao Tuo was a minister to the Han Dynasty. Every year in the spring and autumn, he sent people to Chang'an to see the emperor of Han Dynasty, and accepted the orders of the emperor of Han Dynasty just like the princes. But in South Vietnam, Zhao Tuo continued to use the name of emperor.
In 137 BC, Zhao Tuo, king of Nanyue, died at the age of 104 and was buried in Panyu (now Guangzhou). After Zhao Tuo's death, his descendants continued to be the king of Nanyue for four generations. Until 111 BC, Nanyue was destroyed by the Han Dynasty.
During his reign, Zhao Tuo always carried out the policy of "harmonizing and compiling Baiyue". He attached great importance to the introduction of Han culture and advanced production technology into the Central Plains, promoted the integration of Han and Yue nationalities, made Nanyue develop better, made the people live and work in peace and contentment, and maintained the unity of the motherland.
