Yantai Mountain Lighthouse

In 1867 (the sixth year of Tongzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty), Yantai donghaiguan built Luxun lighthouse on Kongtong island. It was the first lighthouse in Yantai at that time, and later it was changed into Yantai lighthouse.

In 1868 (the seventh year of Tongzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty), Donghai pass built a simple light tower and flagpole with a wooden column roof on the original peak fire platform on the top of Yantai, commanding ships going in and out of Yantai port and forecasting weather information.

It can be seen from the commercial port stamps with Yantai lighthouse and flagpole issued by the East customs post in 1893.

In 1905 (the 32nd year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty), Yantai Mountain lighthouse was built with a third-class bright light and 33000 candles. At this time, the Yantai lighthouse in Kongtong island was renamed Kongtong Island Lighthouse. Yantai Mountain lighthouse has a specially assigned person to manage the lookout. From the distant view (now known as telescope) to the entrance, only the left and right hanging balls (made of Diabolo and painted with color) are placed on the flag pole to make it known to the public. When the ship can recognize the flag (special flag shape and color) when it is near, it should be called to hang the flag on the pole. The flag can only be hung after the ship enters the harbor and anchors. In addition, the lighthouse also uses several kinds of daily signs and night lanterns to forecast the weather of various sea areas to the ships in the harbor. Such simple signals have been used for decades.

After the liberation of Yantai, the docks and ports developed rapidly. The number of ships going to and from Yantai increases by several hundred times every year, and the port throughput increases by tens of thousands of times. Yantai Mountain lighthouse is far from meeting the needs of development. In April 1988, the newly built lighthouse stood on the top of the mountain on the west side of the original lighthouse. The new lighthouse is a modern lighthouse in China, integrating navigation, tourism and maritime traffic command.

Architectural features

Designed by Tsinghua University, the tower has a total height of 49.5 meters and an altitude of 89.2 meters, with a total of 13 floors. The three floors at the bottom are Castle shaped buildings, which can be used for more than 200 people to have a sightseeing view of the harbor. It looks like a conch with upside down shape. It has an elevator which can go directly to the observation platform on the 11th floor and the elevated platform. Through the 45x telescope, you can have a bird's-eye view of Yantai's sea area and urban area. If you encounter a clear sky, you can directly look at Miao island and Yangma island. It's really like stepping on a green wave, with white clouds overhead and a fairyland view of the port city. When the sun sets and the moon is new, the night is empty. The spotlight on the lighthouse passes through the running 1000 pieces of 600mm bull's eye, showing 1000 channels of strong light, with a range of 40km, providing reliable security for maritime navigation.
