Nanshan stone carving
Dazu stone carving is the general name of 102 cliff statues in Dazu District of Chongqing city. Among them, five national key cultural relics protection units are Baoding mountain, Beishan Mountain, Nanshan Mountain, Shimen mountain and Shizhuan mountain. These five sites also became world cultural heritage in 1999, which is the second time that Chinese cave stone carving relics have been selected after Mogao Grottoes.
The original Road on the top of Nanshan Mountain is now known as the Jade Emperor Temple. The stone sculptures in Nanshan originated from the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279 A.D.), belonging to Taoist statues, which were slightly supplemented in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Nanshan stone carving is a national key cultural relic protection unit.
There are few Taoist statues in China, and there are only five on Nanshan, so they are precious.
Nanshan stone carving is located on the top of Nanshan Mountain, about 2 kilometers south of Dazu City, Chongqing. Nanshan, known as Guanghua mountain in ancient times, is famous for its lush trees and beautiful scenery.
Nanshan stone carving was excavated in the Shaoxing period of the Southern Song Dynasty (1131-1162 A.D.). The cliff surface of the statue is more than 80 meters long and 3-10 meters high. It is generally numbered as No. 15 and has been supplemented in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. There are Zhenwu Dadi niche, Houtu Notre Dame niche, Sanqing cave, Dragon Cave and other Taoist statues. It is the most exquisite and complete group of Taoist statues in the Southern Song Dynasty.
A total of 421 statues were carved in the Sanqing cave, which arranged a complete sequence of immortals from "Sanqing and Siyu" to 360 Tianzun, vividly reflecting the historical fact that Taoism had evolved from the early worship of Laojun and Sanguan to the worship of Sanqing and Siyu in the 12th century. Among the Taoist grottoes of Song Dynasty in China, this cave is the most complete and systematic material reflecting the Taoist divine system of Song Dynasty. It is a treasure of Taoist statues in China, and also a precious material for studying the history of Taoism and the art of Taoist statues.
There are 28 inscriptions in Nanshan. Among them, the tablet of "he Guangzhen preserves the prince's dream in 1250" records the basic situation of the social and political history of Eastern Sichuan after being captured by the Mongolian army in the middle of the 13th century, and preserves a lot of precious first-hand information. It has the important value of "proving history by tablet", "supplementing history by tablet" and "dating by tablet".
It was announced as a national key cultural relic protection unit in 1996 and listed in the world heritage list by UNESCO on December 1, 1999.
