Historical evolution
During the Chenghua period of the Ming Dynasty. At that time, the ethnic conflicts between Guangdong and Guangxi were extremely acute. Han Yong, governor of Guangdong and Guangxi, dispatched a large number of troops from Nanjing to Guangzhou for military needs, including more than 1000 troops composed of Hui people stationed in Nanjing at that time. After the Hui people's army came to Guangzhou, it was divided into four battalions, namely Dadong, Xiaodong, Xiying and Zhutong, commonly known as huihuiying. They were stationed inside and outside Guangzhou. Today's xiaodongying street is the former site of xiaodongying, and hence its name.
Since then, these Hui people have settled down in Guangzhou, and this street has become one of their settlements. Many of the Hui compatriots in Guangzhou are descendants of this army. They built three mosques, namely haopan temple, Nansheng temple and Dongying temple, together with Huaisheng temple and ancient tomb of Muslim sages, which are known as the five Islamic holy places in Guangzhou.
Initial construction
Xiaodongying mosque was built in the Chenghua period of the Ming Dynasty. At that time, officers and soldiers came to Guangdong to garrison their villages. For the convenience of religious life, the mosque was built about 500 years ago.
Renovation and reconstruction
In 1817 and 1866, it was rebuilt, and in the Republic of China, it was established in the temple.
Since 1966, Dongying temple has been borrowed for many years by the Hui and Manchu factories in the city, and most Hui people also hold funerals here.
In 1981, the temple management committee carried out a comprehensive overhaul of the temple, mainly including the main hall, the porch and the "Miyi" room for baptism. They rescued and protected cultural relics, improved bathrooms for men and women, and facilitated the baptism of Muslims.
In 2004, Guangzhou Association for Iraq raised more than 300000 yuan to overhaul Dongying temple again. In this major repair, the gate tower and the main hall were all renovated. The ground of the temple was all paved with granite. All the inscriptions and plaques in the temple were jointly repaired as before. The bathrooms and living rooms for men and women were expanded. A meeting room was added to the living room, and a new inscription "the inscription of rebuilding Dongying Temple" was engraved, which changed the old appearance of the ancient temple.
After the 2010 Asian Games, the original funeral service function was moved to Xinshi Hui cemetery. The xiaodongying mosque is under the unified management of Guangzhou Islamic Association. The temple is completely renovated and renewed!
