Historical evolution
The Liang clan originated in Dongguan, Guangdong Province. From the 17th century to the 18th century, Liang Guochu, the twelfth ancestor of the Liang family, brought his family to the new territories. Later, Liang Dacheng, his son, settled in baxiang, Yuen Long and established Yuangang village. The ancestral hall of the Liang family was owned by Liang Dacheng.
According to the memories of the villagers, the name of Yuangang village is related to its topography. There was a round hill behind the Yuangang Township Office, so the village was named Yuangang. However, due to the continuous expansion of the village, the small hill has been leveled and developed into today's resting place, and the name of the village has been changed to Yuangang village. Due to the continuous development of villages in the new territories, many old village houses in Yuangang village have been rebuilt or demolished. The ancestral hall of the Liang family is one of the few historical buildings in the village. The ancestral hall is still used for traditional rituals such as offering sacrifices, lighting lanterns and autumn sacrifices, and it is also a place for the Liang people to discuss affairs.
Architectural features
Liang's ancestral hall is a typical two-way building in the Qing Dynasty. There is a patio between the two buildings, and there are wing rooms on both sides of the patio. The right wing has a kitchen, which was used for cooking potted vegetables during festive activities.
The front wall of the ancestral hall is made of granite and brick, and the top of the wall is equipped with exquisitely carved eaves and Chinese murals, with a solemn appearance. Above the main gate is a stone forehead with the four characters of "Liang clan ancestral hall". The gray plastic decoration of the roof is themed by auspicious animals and auspicious patterns such as plum blossom, peony, lotus and fish, and the gables are also decorated with exquisite grass tail gray plastic decoration. In the back of the ancestral hall, there is a shrine in the Ming Dynasty, where the ancestral shrine is placed. The shrine is engraved with various colorful flowers and plants, such as plum blossom, green bamboo, peony, peach blossom and lotus, to represent the continuous growth of the four seasons, implying that the Liang nationality has branches and leaves.
