history
Tin Hau Temple in Yau Ma Tei was built by local water residents in 1865. It was originally a small temple by the sea in Yau Ma Tei. At that time, it was located around today's Beihai street. In 1870, the residents of Yau Ma Tei formed the five treaties of Yau Ma Tei, rebuilt the temple, and became the local religious center and the most prosperous place. At that time, the land in front of Tianhou temple was the place where fishermen dried the hemp rope on their boats. Many tung oil and hemp rope shops, which operated fishing boats, opened there, which became the origin of the name "Yaumati". However, in 1874, the original temple was destroyed by the wind disaster of 1898. Local residents then raised funds for reconstruction the following year. In 1876, the site was selected to start construction, and it was completed in 1890. In 1887, the streets to the South and north of Tianhou temple were named "miaonan Street" and "miaobi Street" by the government, and then merged into miaojie, which is also the origin of the name "miaojie".
In 1916, the Tin Hau Temple in Yau Ma Tei was repaired again. At the same time, some of its affairs were taken over and managed by Guanghua hospital to subsidize the hospital funds. In 1928, the Chinese Temple Committee officially handed over the temple to Guanghua hospital. In 1931, Donghua Hospital, Guanghua hospital and Donghua east hospital were formally unified into Donghua Third Hospital, which was taken over by Donghua third hospital together with the adjacent Fu Temple in Yau Ma Tei. The Tin Hau Temple in Yau Ma Tei was rebuilt from 1969 to 1972 and merged with the adjacent Yau Ma Tei Town God's Temple, Yau Ma Tei community and Yau Ma Tei college.
