The predecessor of Shenzhen Art Museum is Shenzhen exhibition museum. Founded in 1976, it is the earliest art exhibition organization in Shenzhen. After the establishment of Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, it was officially renamed Shenzhen Art Museum in 1987 with the approval of the municipal government. It covers an area of 5500 square meters, a building area of 2800 square meters and an exhibition hall area of 1200 square meters.

Since its establishment, Shenzhen Art Museum has actively promoted art exchanges at home and abroad through various forms of activities, taking advantage of the "cultural window" of the special zone and the geographical advantages of being adjacent to Hong Kong and Macao. In 2002, Shenzhen Art Museum established its academic orientation of "paying attention to contemporary art and local art". It planned to hold the annual Chinese contemporary art exhibition and Shenzhen local art exhibition, so as to promote the development of Chinese contemporary art and Shenzhen local art and create a good image of the city art museum. Collection
Shenzhen Art Museum actively implements the academic orientation and carries out relevant collection. It has gradually formed the collection characteristics with the classic collection of 20th century masters, Chinese contemporary art and Shenzhen local art as the leading ones. On this basis, it emphasizes the diversity of collection types and carries out the collection of various types of Fine Art. There are 4608 pieces of Chinese paintings, oil paintings, prints, sculptures, calligraphy, watercolors, comics, paper cutting, photography, etc.

In addition to contemporary art exhibitions, holding Art Museum forum is also a major measure for Shenzhen Art Museum to implement its academic orientation. The forum of Shenzhen Art Museum is held once every two years.
