Dongchan Temple
Dongchan temple is located in Songjiang District of Shanghai. According to the records of Songjiang town, the temple was built in the sixth year of Shaoxing in Song Dynasty. The imperial court granted it the name of Baosheng temple and later renamed it dongchan temple.

Brief introduction to temples
At the end of Ming Dynasty and the beginning of Qing Dynasty, the temples were in disrepair, and the back wall houses were almost destroyed. Until the end of Qing Dynasty, some monks took charge of the restoration, and changed the three hit houses into two buildings to revitalize the eastern Buddhist temple. Religious activities resumed in 1993.

Dongchan temple is located in Dongmen Village, Chedun Town, Songjiang District, Shanghai. It was once one of the "eight temple incense" in Songjiang city. Eight temples are Puzhao temple, Chaoguo temple, Guanghua temple, Longmen temple, dongchan temple, Xichan temple, Nanchan temple, and BeiChan temple. Every year, the prefect and county magistrate will celebrate the Spring Festival. They must pay homage to the Buddha here. From Ming Dynasty to Qing Dynasty, they have been the first place to visit the Vatican Palace for a long time.
The beginning of the construction
Dongchan temple was built in 1131, the first year of Shaoxing in the Southern Song Dynasty. According to the records of Jiaqing Prefecture, it was Taohua nunnery at the beginning. In the Song Dynasty, the monk Xing Kong of Shu lived here to rest. In the early years of Shaoxing in the Southern Song Dynasty (after 1131), that is, six years after XingKong's founding, the temple was built in the sixth year of Shaoxing (1136), and the imperial court granted the temple "Baosheng Temple". Later, it was renamed "Baosheng Temple". Because there are Buddhist temples in the East and west of Songjiang yamen, the temple is located in the east of the yamen, so it is also called "dongchan Temple". In 1346, the monk Wenyou built Qingxi Pavilion in the west of the temple. The pavilion is close to the water and planted with flowers and bamboos. People who pass by often visit it. Scholars and bureaucrats all chant about it. Yang Weizhen once wrote about it, which made the temple famous all over the world. In the history of Songjiang, there are places to burn Eight Temples incense. Abbot monk Tianxia and monk Yuanji built Tianwang hall and Qinglian Pavilion (Ciying Pavilion).
During the Wanli period (1573-1619), sengbikong rebuilt the Western Hall. During the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty (1662-1722), the temple was in great glory. In 1786, Seng Yuquan collected money for renovation. Xianfeng ten years (1860) destroyed by war. In 1871, Seng Puxin rebuilt the three pillars of the temple, which made the ancient temple of dongchan Temple brilliant and solemn. Shoudai is Tianwang hall, erdai is Daxiong hall, and Sandai is Qinglian Pavilion. The eastern chamber has the Jialan hall, and the Western chamber has the Sansheng hall. There are bamboo groves and monk pagodas behind the East Temple, with neat layout.

At the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China, there were frequent wars in Dongmen, where the soldiers scattered into the temple to make trouble, the temple buildings were destroyed, and the incense declined. In the sixth year of the Republic of China, Seng Qingchun had to change Sandai temple into erdai. Later, master Yuanjue was the abbot. The Japanese invaders invaded China, the Songjiang River was hit by disaster, the crossing of the East Chan temple and the west rail was severely blocked, the people fled, the monks scattered, the walls were destroyed, the bamboo and wood were cut down, and the temples were dilapidated. Until liberation, only the intelligent mage was left to guard the houses.
At the beginning of the founding of the people's Republic of China, dongchan temple was protected by the party's religious policy, and under the support of the Buddhist Association of Songjiang County, master Xuexiang was invited to dongchan temple to lecture for seven days. In 1953, the master of wisdom passed away, and the temple was silent for a time. When the Cultural Revolution was rampant, the Buddha statues in the temple were destroyed, and the temples were built into straw bags, canteens, brigade offices, warehouses, tractor parking stations, etc.
Buddhist significance
After the Third Plenary Session of the Eleventh Central Committee, with the efforts of the county religious office and the Buddhist Association, the Buddhist Association took back the dongchan temple in early 1993. Under the leadership of Abbot Xing Xiu, the president of the county Buddhist Association, and abbess Chuanxian (Xinbang), they raised funds to repair the remaining erdai and Erxiang houses in dongchan temple. The statue of Zungong Buddha, renamed dongchan temple, was opened to the public on the first day of July of the lunar calendar in 1993, and the Buddhist Dojo of dongchan temple was restored. There are five jade Buddhas in Daochang.
Surrounded by yellow walls, dongchan temple is very quiet. Temple morning bell and evening drum, chanting sound from time to time out of the wall. On the first and fifteenth day of the Lunar New Year and the birthday of Buddha, pilgrims come to worship incense and worship Buddha. In August of the 1995 lunar calendar, Chang Dingshi Tai Jin temple was appointed as the supervisor of the Imperial College, and vowed to glorify the Eastern Zen temple with her graduation energy.
The scale
In 2010, dongchan temple was renovated and expanded, and the building area increased from 1130 square meters to 2922 square meters.
