The origin of naming

Bitan was first named by local poet and gentry Cai Yulin who came from Xindian. When he was gathering with friends to recite poems, he created the poem "Bitan" based on the green mountains and clear water of Xindian. Later, this poem was included in the poetry magazine. In addition, the scenery of Xindian was selected as "Taiwan's eight scenic spots and twelve scenic spots", so it became famous.

In 1927, during the Japanese occupation of Taiwan, the main newspaper in Northern Taiwan, Taiwan Riri Xinbao, selected a new version of Taiwan's eight sceneries by popular vote according to the official practice of ordering eight sceneries in the Qing Dynasty. At the same time, it also selected two different styles and twelve victories as supplements. The twelve victories at that time included Caoshan, Wulai, Daxi, Jiaobanshan, Wuzhishan, Xueshan, Baguashan, Wushe, Beigang, hutougu, shitoushan and Qishan. However, it is said that Wulai in the twelve victories at that time actually meant Xindian scenery with Bitan as the center, which is the reason why the name of Bitan mentioned above was widely publicized.

Sun Ke, vice chairman of the national government, visited Taiwan and praised the beautiful scenery of Bitan. Therefore, he put the word "Bitan" on dayanbi on the West Bank of diaoqiaotou as a memento. Up to now, Sun Ke's word can still be seen on the stone wall on the bank.

Bitan drawbridge

In addition to the beautiful surface of the pool, the huge stone wall with the nickname of "Little Red Cliff" and the Bitan suspension bridge are two other important scenic spots in Bitan. Before the beginning of the 19th century, there was no transportation route between the East and west sides of the Xindian River, which is now called Dapinglin and ankeng. In the earliest years, the aborigines usually crossed the river only by swimming. Until the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, bamboo and snake cages were built between the two sides due to the construction of Liugong channel, and then they were used as temporary bridges. Since 1881, there have been ferries on both sides of Xindian river. From the upper reaches to the middle reaches of Xindian River, there are nine ferries, including guangxingdu, xiaokengdu, kuangyaodu, tutandu, wantandu, xiaohoukengdu, zhitandu, xindiandu and diaozaidu.

In 1937, Bitan suspension bridge was officially completed, and there was a fixed traffic route between the two sides for the first time. However, the original ferry still existed, but it gradually changed into the nature of recreation. However, because the cable suspension bridge is not resistant to erosion and the load is limited, it is not suitable for the gradual emergence of heavy vehicles. Therefore, in 1956, a cement structure Bitan bridge was built at the downstream of Bitan (commonly known as Bitan cement bridge and suspension bridge respectively). Bitan bridge was destroyed several times in the early years due to the fierce flood in the rainy season of xindianxi, and was rebuilt and widened. In August 1997, the beiergao Bitan bridge with arch bridge structure was completed, and the whole line of beiergao bridge was opened to traffic. It has become a view of three generations of bridges with different structures, different heights and different uses crossing Bitan at close distance. Bitan suspension bridge has been repaired for three times and has become today's appearance. In 2000, because the old Bitan suspension bridge was crumbling and had structural safety problems, it decided to demolish and rebuild. However, there were many disputes about the shape after reconstruction, but in the end, it was still dealt with in the way of original reconstruction.

Characteristics of Bitan

Although Bitan is called "Tan", it is not a real Lake topography, but a relatively wide river surface caused by the topography. There was a time when feicui reservoir was built on Beishi stream, a tributary of the upper reaches of Xindian River, which caused the water level of Bitan to drop seriously and damaged the landscape. The relevant units especially built a water retaining weir under Bitan bridge to help Bitan accumulate water and maintain the beautiful scenery of the old days. Therefore, today's Bitan can be regarded as a landscape terrain similar to an artificial lake.

As mentioned above, after several bridges across the river have been built in succession, the surface traffic of Bitan has gradually lost the demand for transportation and turned to recreational use. In recent years, due to the disappearance of traditional boat bearers, the water surface of Bitan has been replaced by paddle boats or swan boats operated by passengers. In the early years, the Bank of Bitan was a cobblestone beach, so many people would play and swim in it. However, due to the different depths of the river bed at the bottom of the pool and the fact that it is a river after all, there are many undercurrents and eddies under the water, which cause many people drowning every year.

Bitan has been officially designated as a second-class scenic spot. After rectification, the middle and lower reaches of the river banks have all been changed to the flat shape of the embankment, so they have relatively lost the function of swimming directly.
