The 150 meter long 17 hole bridge modeled on Lugou bridge is the largest bridge in the summer palace. The shape of the bridge is beautiful. From a distance, it looks like a gold and jade belt falling on Kunming Lake. The figure of 17 does not conform to the logic of the emperor. Why should it be designed as 17 holes? The reason is: if the arch is designed with nine holes, it will be easily crossed or collapsed due to too large arch. After thinking about it, the engineers finally came up with a way to get the best of both worlds, which is to design the bridge with 17 holes. From either side of the bridge, the highest part of the bridge is on the ninth hole. There are more than 500 lions of different sizes and shapes carved on both sides of the 17 hole bridge. All the tablets and couplets on the 17 hole bridge were written by Emperor Qianlong. The horizontal couplet on the south side of the bridge is engraved with the word "Xiutian Lingbo". The horizontal couplet on the north side of the bridge is "lingtuo Yanyue", which compares the 17 hole bridge to a beast in the water, lying like a half moon. Another couplet on the north side of the bridge reads "the rainbow lies on the stone beam bank, and the wind blows constantly, the waves return to the blue oars, the shadows turn over, and the moon shines on the sky." it describes the scene where the scenery is more pleasant on an elegant and quiet night.
