History of Hanlin Academy
In the early Qing Dynasty, the Imperial Academy was incorporated into the inner three academies. During the reign of Emperor Kangxi, it was rebuilt in the former site of the Imperial Academy of Ming Dynasty and designated as zhengsanpin Yamen. Since Yongzheng, the Imperial Academy has become an important organ of national talent reserve. Emperor Yongzheng once said: "the selection of officials and posts in the Imperial Academy is particularly cautious. They must have good character and pure knowledge, and they are not qualified for their positions. Therefore, they should cultivate talents of the Imperial Academy and store the auxiliary tools of the public.". In order to show that the emperor of Qing Dynasty attached importance to the Imperial Academy, he often went to the Imperial Academy to hold banquets with princes, ministers, officials and so on. He informed the relevant departments in advance to make preparations for furnishings, throne, musical instruments and so on. At that time, he would write poems with princes and ministers. The stone tablet in this picture is left by Emperor Jiaqing.
Scenic Spots and Historical Sites
According to the dictionary of places of interest in Beijing, "there are five couplets in the inner hall of Dengying gate in QingHan courtyard, with the reading and lecture hall in the West and the editing and inspection hall in the East. Inside the left Langwei gate is the hall of Zhuangyuan (changed into the hall of meritorious officials after the 38th year of Qianlong); inside the right Langwei gate are two ancestral halls, Changli ancestral hall facing south and Tugu ancestral hall facing north. After the hall is the hall of passage, on the left is the hall of waiting for imperial edicts, and on the right is the hall of Dianbo. Then there is the back hall, which faces south and has a throne in it, specially designed for the emperor to visit the temple. The East-West room in the back hall is the library. There is a well Pavilion in the east of the courtyard. It is said that it was dredged by Liu Dingzhi, a Bachelor of Ming Dynasty, so it is called Liu Jing. In the west is a pavilion built by Ke Qian, a scholar of Ming Dynasty. From Liujing to the East is Qingmi Hall (formerly dongzhaifang, which was renovated in the ninth year of Qianlong's reign and was given the title of "Jixian Qingmi", so its name was changed). In front of the hall is Yingzhou Pavilion, under which is Fenghuang pool. There is Baoshan hall in the south of the pool, behind which is Chen lexuan. From keting to the west is the ancestral hall of the first master, the ancestral hall is nanxizhaifang (formerly known as Wenying hall and Gongchen Hall of the Qing Dynasty), and the south is Yuanxin Pavilion.
Book collection of Hanlin Academy
Before 1900, the Imperial Academy of China (so there are many foreign embassy sites in the Ministry of Public Security) located in the area of foreign envoys was famous for its huge collection of books. It was the largest and oldest library in the world at that time, and was compared to Oxford, Cambridge, Heidelberg and Paris in China by Westerners at that time. There are many kinds of rare ancient editions in the Hanlin Academy. The rare copies of Yongle Dadian and Sikuquanshu are collected here. Yongle Dadian, a ten thousand volume book bound with golden silk, is a large comprehensive book compiled by 2000 scholars in the Ming Dynasty. After the fire in Wenyuan Pavilion in the late Ming Dynasty, only copies were left. By the Qing Dynasty, more than 2000 copies were lost, and the rest were collected in the Hanlin Academy (see Encyclopedia of China). In addition, the 79000 volumes of the world's largest academic series Sikuquanshu, compiled by Ji Yun, Lu xixiong and many Qing scholars during the reign of Qianlong, were also collected in the Imperial Academy at that time. The fire of the Imperial Academy in 1900 not only destroyed the splendid buildings, but also destroyed tens of millions of rare ancient books, including Yongle Dadian, which was the only copy left at that time.
