Ruins of the imperial city wall
The site of the imperial city wall is located on the East and west sides of Tiananmen Gate, which is a municipal cultural relic protection unit.
The imperial city wall was built in 1417, the 15th year of Yongle in Ming Dynasty, and completed in the 18th year of Yongle. According to the regulations at that time: outside the palace, ring to the Forbidden City, outside the Forbidden City, heavy to the imperial city. The walls of the imperial city are made of bricks. It is painted vermilion and covered with yellow glazed tiles. There are four gates, Daming gate in the south, Bei'an gate in the north, Dong'an gate in the East and Xi'an gate in the West. The main gate of the imperial city is Chengtian gate. The first year of Shunzhi (1644) changed damingmen into daqingmen. In the eighth year of Shunzhi period, Chengtian gate was rebuilt to Tian'anmen Gate. In the ninth year of Shunzhi, bei'anmen was changed to Di'anmen. The perimeter of the imperial city is more than 9000 meters, the wall height is 6 meters, the wall base is 2 meters thick, and the top is 1.73 meters thick. During the Republic of China, the walls and gates of the imperial city began to be demolished one after another. There is only one section of the wall on both sides of Tiananmen Gate, reaching Beijing hotel in the East and Zhongnanhai in the West. Huangchenggen site park was built in September 2001.
