Construction time
The ancient city wall of Tong'an was built with a perimeter of 2544 meters, a height of about 3.8 meters and a top width of 3.6 meters. There are five gates, named Chaotian in the East, Houde in the west, Tongyu in the south, Gongchen in the north and Qingfeng in the northwest. At first, it was rammed with earth. Later, it was destroyed by floods and wars. It was built many times in the past dynasties. When it was rebuilt in 1482, the east gate was renamed Yingyang, the northwest gate zhendui, the South Gate Laixun, the north gate LVYE, and the northwest gate Qingfeng. In the 37th year of Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty (1558), in order to prevent Japanese pirates from invading, the wall was built with brick for 1 meter. The West and north gates were added with heavy gates, and 59 posts were set up. The next year, 10 more enemy towers were built. When it was rebuilt in the 25th year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty (1597), the perimeter was expanded to about 2710 meters and the height was about 7.4 meters (nearly twice as high as the rammed earth wall in the Song Dynasty). It was renamed "Hongjian" in the east gate and "Chaoyang" in the northwest gate. After that, ten fortresses were built on the walls of tu'an city to imitate the Dutch invaders.
On August 26, 1648, the fifth year of Shunzhi in the Qing Dynasty, the wall of the city was bombed by the Qing soldiers, and there was no pheasant dish left. In the 12th year of Shunzhi, the Qing army invaded again. In view of the fact that there was no danger to defend, Zheng Chenggong demolished part of the city wall and officials and people into Bingzhou island to build a new city. In 1680, the Qing army captured Jinxia, and the Qing Dynasty stabilized its rule over Tong'an. It also repaired the walls of Tong'an, which were damaged and repaired again and again. The last renovation was in 1903.
In November 1911, Chen Yanxiang, a member of the Tong'an League, and others planted five colored Republic flags at the five gates and county offices of Tong'an. In 1926, the city walls from Nanmen to xiaoximen were demolished and roads were built. At present, there is only one section between Dongmen and Nanmen, 450 meters long, 4 meters wide at the top, and 5 meters high from the stream bed. Most of it is built with stones, with rammed red mud and no battlements.
In 1996, the 76 meter wall in front of the Confucius Temple was rebuilt and the battlements of the wall were rebuilt.
The second batch of cultural relics protection at county level
There are five gates in one ancient city of Tong'an, and the "Chaotian tower" in Tong'an was rebuilt and completed. The ancient map of Tong'an County in Jiaqing period of Qing Dynasty clearly shows that there are five gates in Tong'an.
Chaotian tower, the only existing ancient city wall in Tong'an, was rebuilt.
Tongan ancient city wall was established as "the second batch of county-level cultural relics protection units" in Tongan County in 1984.
