Historical evolution
The University of Hong Kong is the first university in Hong Kong. It was formed by the merger of the Hong Kong Academy of Western Medicine established in 1887 and the Hong Kong Government Technical College. It was officially founded on Hong Kong Island in 1911. Dr. Sun Yat Sen, the father of the Republic of China, was the first graduate of the Hong Kong Academy of Western medicine.
At that time, Western powers vied with each other to set up universities in China. At that time, Hong Kong Governor Luab believed that Britain also needed to set up a university in Hong Kong. First, it was to compete with other powers. Second, it was to let the Chinese (especially Hong Kong people) identify with British values and compete with the cultural ideas of other powers, so that Britain could expand its power to South China and consolidate its governance in the whole of Hong Kong. The governor of Guangdong, Guangdong and the industrial and commercial circles in the province and Hong Kong of the Qing government also felt that the establishment of universities would help the Chinese learn western science and technology and make China self-improvement, so they acquiesced and supported it. At that time, an industrial accident happened to a cargo ship of Swire Group, which resulted in the casualties of many Chinese crew members. The management was eager to repair the company's image, so they donated money together to support the establishment of HKU. With the support of the British government and other Hong Kong British investors (such as HSBC), Luab finally raised enough funds to build the University and presided over the foundation stone laying ceremony of the University on March 16, 1910.
The University of Hong Kong was founded in 1911, and a formal founding ceremony was held in 1912. Lu Ji thought that it was not suitable for Chinese society to contact with western humanistic values (such as communism) at that time. At first, the University of Hong Kong imitated the system of the University of Liverpool, emphasizing science and engineering but neglecting humanities. Therefore, there were only three colleges: Medical College, Engineering College and liberal arts college. There were no humanities courses such as sociology and philosophy. In December 1916, the University of Hong Kong held its first graduation ceremony, with 23 graduates and 5 honorary graduates.
After the strike in 1925-1926, the Hong Kong government, in order to further communicate Chinese and Western cultures, convened local gentry and businessmen to discuss the establishment of a Chinese department in the University of Hong Kong to allow Chinese secondary school graduates to study. In 1927, the Chinese Department of the University of Hong Kong was set up, and was invited to teach by the former imperial academician Lai Jixi and Qu Dadian. At that time, Deng zhiang, a wealthy businessman, donated money to set up a Chinese college and Feng Pingshan donated money to set up a Chinese library. In 1941, due to the fall of Hong Kong, the headquarters of the University of Hong Kong was bombed, and then it was resumed in 1945. During the Anti Japanese War, the Medical College of the University of Hong Kong moved to Zhengfu street in Chengdu to run a school. After the war, with the needs of the society, it gradually set up schools of science, law and social sciences.
In 1956, in response to the rapidly changing social needs, the University of Hong Kong established the Ministry of continuing education to provide support for adult education. In 1961, the 50th anniversary of the University of Hong Kong was celebrated. At that time, the total number of students exceeded 2000, which was four times that of 1941. In 1967, the school of Social Sciences of the University of Hong Kong was established. In 1969, the law department of the University of Hong Kong was established. In 1982, based on Prince Philip Dental Hospital, the school of Dentistry of the University of Hong Kong was established. It is the only dental higher education institution in Hong Kong.
In 1984, the Department of education and the Department of architecture of the University of Hong Kong established their respective faculties. In the same year, the law department was upgraded to an independent law school. After 1989, the Hong Kong government implemented the localization of tertiary education, so that most Hong Kong people did not have to go to the UK to study in universities. They also prepared for the transfer of sovereignty to China. As a result, the number of Hong Kong university students increased rapidly. In 1992, the Department of continuing education of the University of Hong Kong was transformed into a school of professional and continuing education.
After the return of Hong Kong in 1997, although the University of Hong Kong was troubled by several political disturbances, it gradually shifted from focusing on teaching to paying equal attention to teaching and research, and expanded academic exchanges with universities and research institutes at home and abroad, especially medical research (such as SARS virus research). In 2001, the tenth College of the University of Hong Kong, the school of economics and business administration, was established.
In 2005, the school of medicine of the University of Hong Kong was renamed Li Ka Shing School of medicine of the University of Hong Kong.
In 2010, the foundation of the Centennial Campus of the University of Hong Kong was laid. In 2011, the centennial celebration of the University of Hong Kong was launched. In 2012, the Centennial Campus of the University of Hong Kong was opened and the new academic system began.
On December 15, 2017, the Council of the University of Hong Kong appointed Professor Zhang Xiang as the 16th president of the University of Hong Kong.
On April 2, 2020, it officially announced the establishment of the International University climate alliance with Nanjing University, University of New South Wales and other universities.
On May 19, the University of Hong Kong Standard Chartered Foundation School of Finance and technology was established.

In July 2011, the Li Ka Shing School of medicine of the University of Hong Kong discovered cancer stem cells that lead to recurrence of liver cancer and chemotherapy resistance. This new discovery of HKU has brought a major breakthrough in understanding the formation of liver tumors and cancer treatment in the future. The research was published in the most authoritative academic journal Cell Stem Cell in the field of stem cell research.
In June 2011, the University of Hong Kong discovered a new drug therapy to control influenza. Professor Tu Wenwei, Department of pediatric and adolescent Sciences, Li Ka Shing School of medicine, University of Hong Kong, has found that pamidronate, a drug used in clinical treatment of bone diseases, can effectively control influenza caused by seasonal, pandemic H1N1 virus or avian influenza H5N1 virus. Using the "humanized mouse" model of the complete human immune system, HKU has proved that the new therapy can effectively deal with various types of influenza virus.
In January 2009, professors of the University of Hong Kong won the national science and technology award again.
