On the Hexi Silk Road, on the North Bank of Tongziba reservoir, 10 km away from Minle County, there is a famous ancient temple - tongzisi and tongzisi grottoes, which was built in the Northern Wei Dynasty.
Today, the three main halls, Guanyin hall, nianfo hall, wing room and squatter room of Tongzi temple, which are built of brick and wood structure, were built in 1994 to raise funds for shijuechen and the four believers. They are simple and solemn, forming a complete Buddhist monument with the caves on the mountain behind the temple.
Tongzisi grottoes were built in the Northern Wei Dynasty. There are more than 40 caves with statues and murals. The caves are divided into central pillar cave, Great Buddha Hall cave, Bodhi cave, Luohan cave and other caves. The murals in the caves are from the Northern Wei Dynasty, Sui Dynasty, Tang Dynasty, Yuan Dynasty, Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty. The well preserved works are from the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Among them, there are frescoes with esoteric contents in Bodhi cave and tiandongzi, including six Avalokitesvara, five Ming kings, thousand hands and thousand eyes Avalokitesvara and so on. It is also rare to see in Dunhuang thousand Buddha cave, which is of great reference value for the study of Hexi grottoes.
