The indigenous steelmaking furnace is located on the south slope of heiyaodong village, Baiyin Mongolian Township, Sunan Yugur Autonomous County. There are 159 smelting furnaces in the site, most of which have collapsed, and more than 50 are relatively complete. The largest smelting furnace is 8 meters high with a diameter of 14 meters; the smallest is 2.5 meters high with a diameter of 2.7 meters; most of the smelting furnaces are pagoda shaped, with one or more flues in the furnace, and the inner chamber of the smelting furnace is built with adobe; some larger furnaces are built by digging holes at the height of the mountain ridge, with one or more arched openings for charging, ignition and slag removal, and a number of ventilation furnace channels are set at the bottom There are 10 furnace bodies connected into one. The whole smelting furnace group stretches for more than two kilometers, which is quite spectacular. These steelmaking furnaces were built in 1958 during the Great Leap Forward period and shut down in 1960. Some of them have not been used since they were completed. Due to the good smelting conditions of iron ore and coal produced near the areas where these steel-making furnaces are located, there were nearly 1000 steel-making furnaces in the area of more than 50 kilometers up and down the Liyuan River, covering an area of about 50 square kilometers.
