Brief introduction to temples
Dayun temple, formerly known as hongzang temple, is a famous Buddhist temple with a long history and grand scale. It was built by Zhang Tianxi in 363, the seventh year of liangshengping in the Sixteen States of the Eastern Jin Dynasty.
In July of the first year of the early Tang Dynasty, it was rebuilt and renamed Dayun temple. Due to repeated earthquakes and wars, the temple was once damaged. In the 16th year of Hongwu (1383) of Ming Dynasty, Japanese monk Salmonella Zhiman traveled across the ocean to visit Dayun temple in Liangzhou and presided over the fund-raising and reconstruction, which is said to be a good story in the history of friendship between the Chinese and Japanese people.
Main building
The main existing buildings of Dayun temple include Mountain Gate, hall, Daxiong hall, Jinding glazed pagoda, sutra collection building, accessory hall and wing room. Most of them were rebuilt in 1716.
Layout structure
Dayun temple is commonly known as Tiefo temple. In the southwest corner of Linfen City, Shanxi Province. It was built in Zhenguan period of Tang Dynasty, destroyed by earthquake in 1695, and rebuilt in 54. The temple is composed of Mountain Gate, offering Pavilion, central hall, square tower and Sutra Pavilion.
The square tower has six floors. The first to fifth floors are square, and the sixth floor is octagonal. It is built according to the eight diagrams. The tower is more than 30 meters high, each layer has glass components, inlaid into imitation center.
The contents are stories of Buddha, Bodhisattva, arhat, disciples and Buddha biography, written by craftsmen in Yangcheng County. The first floor is hollow, with a built-in iron Buddha head 6 meters high and 5 meters in diameter. It has a plump shape and dignified eyebrows. It should be the original work of the Tang Dynasty.
In Dayun temple, three Bodhisattvas, Guanyin, Manjusri and Puxian, are offered to one hall, which is called "three great scholars hall", which is quite unique in the regulation of Buddhist temples. This may also be Wu Zetian's "ingenuity".
According to the interpretation of the Buddhist scriptures, "great masters" is the general name of Bodhisattvas. Bodhisattvas are second only to Buddhas in taste. Although Guanyin, Manjusri and Puxian have reached the realm of Buddhas, they are willing to become Buddhas only when they vow to save all suffering beings in the world. However, the suffering of the world is endless, so they have to stay in the position of Bodhisattvas forever.
In order to promote the merits of these three Bodhisattvas, they are called "great masters" so as to be different from ordinary Bodhisattvas.
There is another saying that Wu Zetian reformed the imperial examination system and first opened the "women's examination system". She named three of China's most influential Bodhisattvas (Guanyin, Manjusri, and Puxian) as "great scholars" in order to use folk beliefs to serve her as "Maitreya Buddha". This is the restoration of the three statues.
On both sides of the seat are shancai boy and Longnv. The lion rider is Manjusri, and the elephant rider is Puxian.
Cultural relics protection
Dayun temple is a provincial key cultural relics protection unit announced in 1992. It was built in the Tang Dynasty and has a history of more than 1300 years.
Dayun temple is a special Temple created in a special era because of a special event. The foundation of this temple is related to a special woman, who is Empress Wu Zetian. In 690 A.D., Wu Zetian, who had already been queen and empress dowager, wanted to be emperor and tried hard to find suitable reasons. With the help of Feng Xiaobao, a monk of Baima temple in Luoyang, we found a book called Dayun Jing, which said, "Maitreya was born to be a queen, and is powerful all over the world.". They took advantage of these words to carry out "the revolution of changing the world", saying that Wu Zetian was "born under Maitreya and promoted by Yan Fu in the contemporary Tang Dynasty". So he changed the Tang Dynasty to Zhou Dynasty and became a female emperor. She ordered the two capital states to build Dayun temple, recite Dayun Scripture, and preached "divine power". For a time, Dayun temple was built in all counties of the country. At that time, Shangzhou belonged to the capital of Chang'an in the western capital, and the Dayun temple was quite spectacular. It faces Danjiang River in front of it and Jinfeng mountain behind it. Half of it is inside the city and half outside the city. Those outside the city are called Shangsi and those inside the city are called Xiasi.
Related allusions
History played a joke on the queen. In 705 ad, Li Xian, the son of the empress, restored the Tang Dynasty system. The first thing he did was to order the destruction of Dayun temple, which was soon completed in all States. Dayun temple in Shangzhou was renamed "xiyanyuan" by local officials and survived. From the Yuan Dynasty to the Zheng Dynasty, the Dayun temple in Shangzhou was overhauled. Because every brick on the gable of the main hall was printed with the word "Dayun Temple", the name had to be changed again.
At present, there are only three Dayun temples all over the country, among which the Dayun temple in Shangzhou is relatively complete. It is located in the West Street of Shangzhou City, covering an area of 8000 square meters. The four main halls have been repaired several times and still maintain the historical style.
Scenic spots in the temple
Square pagoda is the essence of the temple, six layers, one to five floors are square, sixth levels are star anise, according to eight diagrams in the direction of construction. The tower is 30 meters high. It is made of water milled green bricks. There are 28 iron peaks on the four corners of the tower. The breeze suddenly rises and jingles. It is crisp and pleasant, and full of ancient taste. Each layer is decorated with 64 pieces of glass pattern components to imitate the heart. The contents are Buddhist legends and stories, which are made by craftsmen in Yangcheng County. The first floor of the tower is hollow and has a large space. The built-in pig iron Buddha head is six meters high and five meters in diameter. It is full-bodied, dignified and has both shape and spirit. It is the original work of the Tang Dynasty, so it is called iron Buddha. It reflects the level of Pingyang smelting technology in the prosperous Tang Dynasty, and is of great value to the study of mining and smelting technology in China.
The main hall is called Tianwang hall. It is the place where the four heavenly kings and Maitreya Bodhisattva are worshipped. The Buddha in the temple of heavenly king is close to Maitreya. Maitreya is his surname. His Sanskrit name is "Maitreya ayido". The great cloud Sutra says that Maitreya was born ahead of time to save all living beings. Wu Zetian borrowed these scriptures to imply that Feng Xiaobao and others advocated that she was "Maitreya reincarnation". Therefore, the statue of Maitreya Bodhisattva in Dayun temple has the characteristics of "male head and female body". Some people say that this is a portrayal of Wu Zetian. Now, there are two Maitreya statues of goddess in China, and the other one is in Longhua Temple in Shanghai.
Relief art
Level 6 Jinding glazed pagoda is the essence of Dayun temple, square and solid, about 30 meters high. Above the second floor of the pagoda, there are 58 Buddhist relief glass patterns in various shapes.
At the bottom of the pagoda, there is an iron Buddha head of Sakyamuni in the Tang Dynasty. It is about 6 meters high and 16 meters long. It has a long and accurate face, wide eyes, broad lips, ears and shoulders. It is solemn and kind. The hollow head of Buddha is said to be the place where scriptures and Temple Treasures are stored. According to experts, the Buddha's head is cast with tens of thousands of kilograms of pig iron at one time, which is amazing.
