It is located in the southeast of horseshoe temple. The grottoes are more than 60 meters away from the earth's surface. Up the 211 stone steps, you can enter the East cave first. This is a 9.70m wide, 7.65m deep and 6.05m high longitudinal grotto. The top of the cave is in the form of a covered bucket. "There is a central square pillar in the middle. Many high flesh carving Buddhas, Bodhisattvas and flying Apsaras decorate the central square pillar magnificently. If you look around the central column, you will find that the statues are extensive in content, varied in form, and of different sizes. The central pillar is surrounded by three layers of niches, each with a prominent theme.
Buddhist statues in Grottoes
The lower layer is the first layer of the base altar. There is a large round arch niche with a pearl niche in the middle of each side. The niche is 1.30 meters high. The two sides of the niche are molded with inverted faucets. Each niche has a Buddha. The Buddha sits on the lotus platform with a plump face and a serene look. In addition to a disciple on the back of the niche, there are two meters high Bodhisattvas in the south, East and west of the niche. Their symmetrical and plump body and natural and vivid expression achieve a perfect harmony. The skirt is thin and transparent, and the pleats are simple and free, giving people a cool feeling of light wind. On both sides of the top lintel arch of the four niches, there are three or four flying bodies, which are relatively flying in the air. With its lively and light posture, it has the feeling that it is ready to come out, and it is unique in China. Three arched shallow niches are chiseled side by side in the middle layer, one Buddha in each niches, one Bodhisattva in the south, East and West niches, and One Thousand Buddhas in the North niches. The sculptors vividly portray the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas with different expressions with delicate techniques. Some of them are quiet and solemn, some are reserved and quiet, some are meditative, some are amiable, some are powerful and vigorous, some are smiling. Such as Maitreya's plump face, simple and vigorous, and Sakyamuni's haggard appearance, meditation and meditation, all vividly reflect the Buddha's mercy and the suffering of practice.
From the point of view of the costumes of the Buddhas, although they have their own characteristics, they are light, soft, smooth and full of silk texture. Looking at these statues with both spirit and form, you can't help feeling that it is a kind of artistic enjoyment and getting a beautiful edification. You can't help admiring the exquisite skills and superb skills of our ancient craftsmen. In the upper layer, ten Buddhas and ten Bodhisattvas are carved on all sides except the five Buddhas in the west of the central pillar. The Buddhas and Bodhisattvas on the top of the central pillar not only form diversity, but also make the surface of the pillar look solemn and gorgeous. Especially those Bodhisattvas who look on the fence or reverently stand, all of them are lively and full of life interest. Although the statue has been re described by later generations, it still has the characteristics of ancient elegance and simplicity.
Looking at the small Buddhas and Bodhisattvas on the walls of the four niches of the central pillar, they are exquisite and charming. For example, the small Buddha on the north side of the lower niche on the west side of the central pillar is 0.80 meters high. It has a childish face, arms and legs raised, and seems to fall from the sky in the wind. It is full of interest. It is wearing a shoulder coat, and the shade pattern is simple and smooth, showing its unique style. Another example is the two half bodied Bodhisattvas on the south side of the middle layer on the west side of the central pillar. They raise their arms forward, as if they are greeting the people who come to worship the Buddha, permeated with a strong atmosphere of life. The West cave, which is adjacent to the East cave, has the same shape as the East cave, but its scale is slightly smaller than the East cave, with a width of 7.90 meters, a remnant depth of 3.90 meters and a height of 4.30 meters. The central pillar of the cave is also divided into three layers. No matter Buddha, Bodhisattva or flying Apsaras, they all have their own modality. The simple and upright statue of Maitreya, the friendly and natural way of offering to the Bodhisattva, the graceful thinking of the Bodhisattva, and the dignified manner of the Bodhisattva all reflect the rich ideas and wisdom of the ancient craftsmen in China. The hanging technique of the statue has a strong three-dimensional sense and a unique artistic effect.
In addition to the statue of the central pillar, murals are painted on the top and four walls of the eastern and Western grottoes. There are two layers in the eastern grottoes and three layers in the Western grottoes, which are of high artistic value. The statues or murals in the two grottoes are naturally bright, elegant and bright, reflecting the rich national characteristics of clothing and setting off the physical beauty of the statues. Its unique hairstyle and clothing show the distinctive features of the statues. Mr. Shi Yan, a historian of sculpture, praised the grottoes as early as 1954 after inspecting them: "this is a large-scale sculpture of high flesh with great spirit, which is full of creativity. It has accepted the traditional form of shadow sculpture, and has been further developed. It gives people much more appeal than shadow
. Artists can't do it unless they have more perfect imagination, higher performance technology, richer creative experience and bold composition design ability.
