Memorial Hall of Southwest Shandong campaign

Southwest Shandong Campaign Memorial Hall is located in the cemetery of Yangshan revolutionary martyrs in Jinxiang County, Jining City, Shandong Province (see entry: Yangshan campaign site). It displays some rare historical photos, telegrams, letters and objects.

Historical sources

In 1947, Liu Bocheng and Deng Xiaoping, in accordance with the strategic plan of the Party Central Committee, led the field army of Shanxi, Hebei, Shandong and Henan to move southward. On the night of June 30, they broke through the natural danger of the Yellow River and marched into southwest Shandong. In order to prevent our army from going south, Chiang Kai Shek hastily mobilized three reorganizing divisions and a brigade from the Soviet Union, Henan and Anhui provinces in an attempt to destroy our army in the delta of the Yellow River and the canal. Liu and Deng saw through the enemy's plot and took advantage of the situation to launch the Southwest Shandong campaign. The tactics of "attacking one point (Yuncheng), luring the enemy to help, biting one side (Dingtao) and breaking through each one" were adopted. First of all, Yuncheng and the weak enemy on the West Road were annihilated, and the enemy's left road was paralyzed. Chiang Kai Shek's direct troops reorganized the 66th division. Seeing that the situation was not good, they retreated to Yangshan and stood by for help. Our army quickly concentrated its superior forces and overcame all kinds of difficulties. From July 14 to July 28, through arduous and fierce fighting, it completely annihilated this stubborn enemy, thus ending the whole southwest Shandong campaign.

In the Southwest Shandong campaign, four reorganized divisions and nine and a half brigades of 56000 people were annihilated. Among them, song Ruike, commander of the 66th division, Chen Yiding, commander of the 70th division, and other senior Kuomintang generals captured a large number of weapons and equipment.

The victory of the Southwest Shandong campaign opened up the way for the PLA to march into the Central Plains, leap into the Dabie Mountains, and lead the war to the Kuomintang ruled areas. It opened the prelude for the PLA to shift from strategic defense to strategic attack, and made the Chinese people's revolutionary war start a great turning point, creating favorable conditions for winning the national victory.

In order to commemorate our soldiers who died bravely in the Southwest Shandong campaign and better inherit and carry forward the glorious tradition of our party and army, with the care and support of the Central Military Commission, provincial and municipal Party committees, governments and relevant departments, Liu Huaqing, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and vice chairman of the Central Military Commission who had participated in the Southwest Shandong campaign, inscribed the name of the memorial hall in his own hand.

Introduction to the memorial

In the memorial hall of the Southwest Shandong campaign, there are Chairman Mao's personal letter to the leaders Liu and Deng; the message of "crossing the river order" issued by the headquarters of the Shanxi Hebei Shandong Henan field army at that time; the group photo of Comrade Liu Bocheng and Comrade Deng Xiaoping after crossing the yellow River; the photo of our army on the way to Dabie Mountain; the photo of our army encircling Yangshan and capturing the enemy alive; Song Ruike, Lieutenant General of the integrated 66th division, and Guo Yulin, chief of staff of major general The people's daily, the Hebei Shandong Henan Daily and the Dazhong Daily reported on the brilliant achievements and victories of the Southwest Shandong campaign and the Yangshan battle. The memorial hall of Southwest Shandong campaign is an important base for us to remember the revolutionary martyrs and carry out revolutionary tradition education.
