Beiyi highway

Belonging to the first section of Taiwan Provincial Highway 9, it is a highway connecting the Taipei Basin and the Lanyang Plain, with a total length of about 58 km. It starts at Xinwu intersection (12K of Tai 9 line) near Bitan, Xindian City, Taipei County, and arrives at Lanyang Plain after downhill of Jinmian mountain in Toucheng Town, Ilan County. It ends at the fork of Qingyun Road (Tai 2 Geng line) in Toucheng town (70K of Tai 9 line), passing through Xindian City, shiding Township, Pinglin Township and Toucheng Town, Ilan County.

At the junction of Pinglin Township, the relay station, and line 106 B of Taipei County Road, Beiyi highway can be transferred to Mucha, Shenkeng, shiding and Pingxi townships of Taipei City, and can be connected to Beiyi Expressway (beiyigao) via Pinglin interchange. However, due to the environmental protection of the water source area, the number of vehicles entering and leaving Pinglin Township via beiyigao is limited.

The landscape along the Beiyi highway changes in many sections. In Taipei County, the landscape is hilly. Beishi River, the water source of the Taipei basin, can be seen in Pinglin township. There are many tea plantations producing packaged tea in the villages and towns of Taipei County. From Pinglin township to the boundary of Taipei County and Ilan County, coniferous forest can be seen due to the high terrain. After crossing the county boundary, the mountain began to descend. The Lanyang Plain suddenly appeared. When the weather was clear and the air humidity was low, even Guishan Island could be seen clearly. Whether the farmland and houses in the daytime or the lights in the night, it was a good place to have a bird's-eye view of the Lanyang Plain.

The Jinmian mountain road, which goes to Ilan, is known as "nine turns and eighteen turns" because of the winding downhill road. Due to the rugged road line and poor sight, it was considered unclean due to frequent major accidents in the early years. There was even the custom that passing cars would sprinkle paper to comfort the dead. However, the relevant units have carried out large-scale route improvement. In addition to widening the lanes and increasing the buffer space, some slopes that will hinder the line of sight have also been removed, which greatly improves the driving safety, but also gradually loses the original dangerous atmosphere of nine turns and eighteen turns.

On the way, there is an ancient horse racing Road, which is the land link between Toucheng town and Jiaoxi town in Ilan County and Wulai town in Taipei County. During World War II, Japanese officers and soldiers used to patrol and hunt on horseback. Now it has been built as a walking trail.
