Alishan Shenmu group

Introduction to scenic spots

The only scenic spot in Alishan was the Alishan Shenmu beside the Alishan Forest Railway Shenmu station. The results show that there are as many as 300000 red cypress trees in the original forest. Now when tourists come to Alishan, the forest they see is no longer the magnificent original cypress forest in Alishan. At present, the Shenmu group that can be appreciated is mainly the red cypress near the plank road of the first and second giant wood groups in the recreation area set up by the forest management department, and along the trail from Ciyun Temple to Alishan Shenmu. There are about 41 trees, which are about 600 to 2300 years old. Among them, the more famous are Alishan Shenmu, Guangwu Shenmu, Xianglin Shenmu (No. 28 Shenmu), qiansui huishenmu and No. 12 Shenmu.

Shenmu

The sacred tree of Mt. Ali originally refers to a red cypress on Mt. Ali in Taiwan, which is more than 3000 years old. The tree was discovered in November 1906 by Japanese fumitaro Ogasawara, and was honored as "Shenmu" by Japanese. According to statistics, the tree is 53 meters high and more than 3000 years old. The diameter of the trunk at the height of one and a half meters above the ground is 4.66 cm. The trunk reaches 23 meters around the ground, and the volume reaches 500 cubic meters. After the opening of Alishan Forest Railway, it has become one of the famous landmarks in Taiwan. Due to the early logging area near Shenmu, except for a few red cypresses such as Alishan Shenmu, which were regarded as Shenmu and preserved, other large red cypresses were completely cut down. Shenmu stands out like a rooster and is vulnerable to lightning strike. In the early morning of June 7, 1956, Shenmu was struck by lightning, and the oil in the tree core was burned. Although there were twigs at the top of the tree, they withered soon after, and were declared hopeless by forestry experts. After the lightning strike, the Yushan National Park Authority planted juniper seedlings on the remains of Shenmu to maintain its green appearance. This move has been criticized by some people for cheating tourists.

On July 1, 1997, due to continuous heavy rain, the root of Shenmu was seriously decayed, half of the tree burst and fell on the forest railway, crushing the railway track. After experts' assessment, they thought that there was a danger of safety, so on June 29, 1998, the sacred tree was officially put down. As a result, the sacred tree in Alishan went into history, and the fallen tree body was laid horizontally in place, becoming a relic for people to look at.

The second generation of Shenmu

Original Guangwu cypress

Alishan fragrant forest tree (formerly Guangwu cypress): after the fall of Alishan tree, the Jiayi county government and Alishan Scenic Area Management Office planned to select other giant trees in the scenic area as new tourist landmarks. The online voting campaign was held between September and November 2006, with 25000 people taking part in the voting. Guangwu Hui won the highest vote and became the second generation of Shenmu in Alishan. On January 1, 2007, Chen Mingwen, the county magistrate, was crowned as the "fragrant tree of Alishan". However, this confused the names of the two trees in Alishan.

Xianglin Shenmu

Alishan Xianglin Shenmu: Alishan Xianglin Shenmu, formerly known as Guangwu Hui. It is located next to the Ciyun Temple and Xianglin elementary school, near the No.1 giant wood trail of Alishan. The tree species is red cypress, with a chest circumference of 12.3 meters and a height of 45 meters. The estimated age of the tree is 2300 years, and the altitude is 2207 meters. The old name is Guangwu because it is estimated that the time when the sacred tree landed and germinated was about the reign of Emperor Guangwu of the Eastern Han Dynasty. This name was named by Huang Jie, former president of Taiwan Province. On January 1, 2007, it was renamed "Alishan Xianglin Shenmu".

A giant red cypress with two forks. It is estimated that the tree is about 2000 years old, 35 meters high, 11 meters chest girth and 2215 meters above sea level. The origin of thousand year old juniper was in the era of Japanese occupation. At that time, forest officials thought that its tree shape looked like a gesture of holding hands high to shout long live (Japanese means cheering), and named it long live juniper. It was not until 1976 that Mr. Xie Dongmin, who was in Taiwan at that time, visited Alishan and saw Wansui Hui. He thought that Wansui Hui was only 2000 years old and should not be named Wansui, so he changed his name to qiansui Hui from then on. There is a fraternity pavilion next to the thousand year old juniper, in which there are poems about the father of the nation, and next to it is the starting point of the first giant wood group.

Xianglin Shenmu

Xianglin Shenmu: Xianglin Shenmu is also called Alishan 28 Shenmu. The 14th tree species in the list of Taiwan's Shenmu is the red cypress, with a chest circumference of 14.7 meters and an age of 2000 years. In the hidden forest below the back playground of Xianglin primary school, it is the second forest class of Alishan. It was discovered as early as the period of Japanese occupation, but it has not been noticed because of the famous Alishan Shenmu not far away. At present, the forest management department is building the second giant Wood Group plank road in the recreation area, with a total of 21 giant trees. There is also a viewing platform beside Xianglin Shenmu.
