"Neishidi" was originally called Shen family courtyard, which was built by Shen Shuyong's ancestors. In the ninth year of Xianfeng (1859) of the Qing Dynasty, Shen Shuyong was elected as an official in the cabinet, and Shen's courtyard was renamed "neishidi".

Neishidi is located at no.218 Xinchuan Road, Chuansha new town, Pudong New Area, Shanghai. It is located in wangqianxian (later changed to Xinchuan Road). It faces south from the north and has three courtyards. It is a typical Jiangnan official residence and a rare Jiangnan folk residence gathered by celebrities in China. It is adjacent to lanfentang (now the East residential area), Nanshi street in the west, wangqian Lane in the South (now Xinchuan Road) and Hongyuan (now Chuansha bookstore) in the north.

architectural style

"Neishidi" covers an area of 1500 square meters. It used to be a two-story brick and wood house with three entrances, two courtyards and two compartments. The architectural style of neishidi is not only rich in the characteristics of Jiangnan folk houses in Qing Dynasty, but also the carving decoration in the buildings is particularly prominent.

The most prominent stone carving of neishidi is the door frame pattern and the stone carving decoration on both sides of the threshold. The door with black lacquer steel ring is a door frame made of stone. The door frame is carefully carved with the characters and various flower and bird patterns in the drama of past dynasties.

There are exquisite carved instrument doors at the gate of neishidi, with cornices and angles. On the front, there are brick carvings such as "phoenix play peony" and "Zhuangyuan Youjie" symbolizing the architectural style of the late Qing Dynasty. In the middle, there are four characters of "Huatang yingri". On the back of the instrument door, there are pictures of "phoenix play peony" and four characters of "Dehou Chunqiu". This is a typical architectural design style of the late Qing Dynasty, and the gate building is flanked by brick carvings of "the number one scholar visiting the capital" and "the number one scholar presenting treasure". Wood carvings are widely used in the construction of neishidi architecture, especially in the long windows and columns of libentang. The main beams and wall beams are inlaid with various exquisite patterns made of red copper and gilded with gold. The pillows and eaves on both sides of the beams are all made of high-grade wood carvings.

As the builder Shen Shuyong is a gold and stone expert and a big collector, "neishidi" once collected many cultural relics, such as Ji Han stele, statues of the Six Dynasties, Tang stone, song stone and so on. Mr. Yu Yue, the father of Yu Pingbo, once lamented that "cultural relics and historic sites are rich in Southeast China" in the internal history, while Huang Yanpei once said that "Pudong culture is in Chuansha, and Chuansha culture is in the internal history".

Celebrities living here

The south wing of neishidi is the birthplace of Song Qingling, Song Meiling, Song Ziwen and other members of the Song family. The east wing is the birthplace of Huang Yanpei's second son, Huang Jingwu's martyr, his cousin, Huang Zi, a famous musician and his younger brother, Huang Zufang, an accountant. In the east of neizhailou is Huang Yanpei's former residence. Huang Daneng, member of the Standing Committee of the CPPCC National Committee, Hu Shi, a famous scholar and other modern celebrities also lived here.

In 1988, in addition to Huang Yanpei's former residence, which was listed as a municipal cultural relic protection unit at that time, two thirds of neishidi was demolished, leaving only the last one to enter Huang Yanpei's former residence, covering an area of 733 square meters. In 2004, Pudong New Area was officially set up for restoration. In 2009, the restoration project of neishidi was started in Pudong New Area, and it was not officially started until April 2010.

The building area has been rebuilt to 1800 square meters. Compared with the original historical appearance, because the main road of Xinchuan road is in front of the gate now, "neishidi" is forced to give way. Its facade is retracted about 5 meters and a door wall is missing. It was officially opened to the outside world in 2012.
