Evolution of school history
SOUTHWEST UNIVERSITY FOR NATIONALITIES
Southwest University for nationalities, formerly known as Southwest University for nationalities, was founded in July 1950 and formally established on June 1, 1951.
On June 1, 1951, the founding ceremony of Southwest Institute for Nationalities and the opening ceremony of the first term were held ceremoniously. At the beginning of 1952, the school drew up the preliminary plan of the five year plan for training ethnic minority cadres (1953-1957), which determined that during this period, the main task was to train political cadres and hold professional and technical classes urgently needed in ethnic areas. On April 15, 518 students of the first phase of the school held a graduation ceremony.
In 1954, the southwest region was abolished, and the school was led by Sichuan Province.
In 1955, the school moved from the new Yusha street to the new campus Near Wuhou Temple, and the school running conditions were greatly improved.
In 1960, the University developed into a multi-disciplinary institution of higher learning with undergraduate courses as the main body, multi disciplines and multi-level development, with a total of 14 undergraduate majors. There are more than 3000 students and 320 teaching staff.
In 1962, in order to implement the policy of "adjusting, consolidating, enriching and improving", the scale of running a school was greatly reduced, and the number of students on campus decreased from more than 3000 to more than 1500.
In 1966, the school stopped recruiting students and teaching activities stopped.
In 1968, the school Revolutionary Committee was established.
In 1973, the school resumed its operation, and all departments (departments) resumed the establishment and activities of teaching and research groups, and welcomed the first batch of students after the resumption of the school, including 148 students from Sichuan and 160 students from Tibet.
In the autumn of 1974, the first batch of 200 minority "workers, peasants and soldiers" were recruited to study Chinese, Tibetan, mathematics, physics and chemistry, animal husbandry and veterinary.
In February 1979, the State Council decided that the school should be under the dual leadership of the State Commission for democracy and people's affairs and Sichuan Province, with the State Commission for democracy and people's affairs as the main body. The State Council listed the school as a key institution during the sixth Five Year Plan period.
In 1986, the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council approved the University as a master's degree awarding unit. The first batch of four master's programs in Chinese classical literature, religion, animal genetics and breeding, and Chinese veterinary medicine began to recruit students the following year, with a total of nine graduate students.
In 1994, the State Commission for democracy and people's livelihood approved the establishment of the College of adult education. In 1996, the College of adult education was officially established.
In 1999, with the approval of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, the University was listed as a degree awarding unit that can carry out the work of applying for master's degree by personnel with the same educational background.
In December 2002, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the State Commission for Nationalities signed an agreement to jointly build six universities affiliated to the State Commission for nationalities.

In 2003, with the approval of the Ministry of education, the University changed its name from "Southwest University for Nationalities" to "Southwest University for Nationalities". With the approval of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, the university has been added as a doctoral degree awarding unit in ethnology.
In September 2005, for the first time, the students realized the "reunion of 56 nationalities".
In June 2008, the North administration building of the new campus was put into use, and the main body of the school was officially transferred to the new campus.
In October 2009, the University was approved to set up a mobile station for postdoctoral research in ethnology.
In September 2010, the headquarters of Qinghai Tibet plateau ecological protection and animal husbandry high tech R & D base was completed.
In 2012, the University was selected as one of the first batch of excellent legal talent education and training bases in China.
In May 2013, the University was rated by the Ministry of education as a national university with typical employment experience.
In 2014, the school was selected into the list of the first batch of excellent agricultural and forestry talents education and training plan reform pilot projects by the Ministry of education, the Ministry of agriculture and the State Forestry Administration.
In March 2015, the State Ethnic Affairs Commission and Sichuan Provincial People's government signed an agreement to jointly build southwest university for nationalities. In October, the State Ethnic Affairs Commission and the Ministry of Education decided to jointly build southwest university for nationalities.
On October 8, 2016, Sichuan provincial government and Southwest University for Nationalities signed a strategic cooperation agreement in Chengdu to support the construction of "double first class" universities.
In October 2017, the University joined the "Yangtze Volga River" University Alliance between China and Russia.
In November, the school was awarded the first national civilized campus honorary title.
In June 2020, the Institute of Tibetan, Qiang and Yi culture of Southwest University for nationalities was founded.
On July 2, he joined the Art Alliance of colleges and universities in Chengdu Chongqing economic circle.
