Yanshan University originated from Harbin Institute of technology and was founded in 1920. In 1958, the heavy machinery department and related majors of Harbin Institute of technology moved to Fulaerji District of Qiqihar City, an important industrial town, and established the Heavy Machinery College of Harbin Institute of technology. In 1960, it was established as an independent school, named Northeast Heavy Machinery Institute, which is subordinate to the Ministry of machinery industry. In 1978, it was designated as a national key university and one of the four national key universities of the former Ministry of machinery industry. From 1985 to 1997, the whole school moved to Qinhuangdao city. In January 1997, with the approval of the former State Education Commission, it was renamed Yanshan University.
