Niutuozhai martyrs cemetery
Niutuozhai martyrs cemetery is a monument standing on the east mountain. It is located in niutuozhai, one of the "four fortresses" guarded by Yan Xishan. Niutuozhai steep terrain, ravines vertical and horizontal, is the danger of guarding the pass of Taiyuan.
During the liberation of Taiyuan in 1949, our army fought hard for nearly a month and occupied niutuozhai, which opened the door to the liberation of Taiyuan. In 1954, a martyr's cemetery was built here to commemorate the martyrs and inspire future generations. In 1988, the municipal government expanded Taiyuan liberation Memorial Hall on the basis of the cemetery, and completed it on April 24, 1989, the 40th anniversary of the liberation of Taiyuan, becoming the revolutionary education base of Shanxi Province.
Major exhibitions
The cemetery covers an area of 93000 square meters and is divided into three parts: Monument area, exhibition area and cemetery. Stepping into the gate is the stele area. There is a unique stele in the area, which looks like a huge key. It is engraved with the gold-plated character "liberation Taiyuan monument", which was inscribed by Marshal Xu Qianqian.
The monument is 49.424 meters high, implying the liberation of Taiyuan. Together with the dark red key monument, it symbolizes the liberation of Taiyuan and leads to happiness. Under the inscription is a stainless steel openwork with a diameter of 8 meters. Shanxi women with full faces support their children and stretch their arms, expressing the boundless joy of the people of the three Jin Dynasties and their bright vision for the future. There are stairs and elevators inside the monument to reach the top of the monument. With a high-power telescope on the top, you can overlook the whole Dongshan mountain and the new appearance of Taiyuan.
On the southwest side of the main stele is a subsidiary stele, which looks like a blockhouse that has been blown up. The diameter of the monument is 24 meters, and the four walls are inlaid with large relief carvings, which vividly reflects the suffering life of Taiyuan people before liberation and the struggle spirit of resisting oppression and striving for liberation.
In addition, on the west side of the gate of the cemetery, there is a white Arc de Triomphe, shaped like steel tongs. Under the steel tongs, there is a tortoise shell made of marble, which is called "catching turtles in a Urn". These three groups of buildings, like three historical witnesses, tell people the past and future of Taiyuan. A new memorial square for Marshal Xu Qianqian has been set up in the monument area. At the back of the square stands a 4-meter-high bronze statue of Marshal Xu Qianqian, which is very strong and powerful. Behind the square are 5 large relief sculptures, 4-meter-high and 50 meter long, reflecting the main battle traces of Marshal Xu Qianqian, to praise his great achievements.

Walk out of the monument area and cross the archway to enter the exhibition area. In the center of the exhibition area are monuments and two tombs of unknown martyrs, while the liberation Taiyuan memorial is symmetrically located on both sides of the north and the south. The memorial hall is an antique building with national characteristics. Covering an area of 1200 square meters, the memorial displays 428 historical photos and more than 120 objects, which are composed of six parts, reflecting the whole process of the Taiyuan campaign. The last part shows the new look of Taiyuan.
The cemetery park is just ahead of us, with verdant pines and green cypresses. The tomb area is arranged in a straight line, with 2000 martyrs sleeping here. There is a memorial hall in front of it, in which more than 5000 martyrs died for the liberation of Taiyuan are engraved. Wreaths and elegiac couplets presented by the people of the provincial capital are displayed around the hall to express their infinite sorrow for the revolutionary martyrs.
